Sea level in San Francisco has risen less than four inches since the Sutro Baths were built in the late 19th century.

  1. Mark Bowlin says:

Someone should tell Al Gore about this so he can sell his waterfront condo in San Francisco.

  2. Grumpy Grampy ;) says:

There is evidence a greater than 200 foot tsunami wave has washed ashore along the California coast during geological times. With that in mind they should require all structures to be more than 500 feet above current mean sea level and no closer to the ocean than 5 miles just to be on the safe side.

  3. Andy WeissDC says:

Has the price of California beachfront property gone down due to all this nonsense?

  4. AFAIK all the estimates for future sea-level rise being considered in California are for GLOBAL sea-level. What use are these anywhere at all around the globe? Rates of rise vary along the CA coast, generally higher in the south, lower in the north. At Crescent City in the N, the level is actually dropping.

  5. Bruce says:

Just imagine what a whole suburb of houses on stilts will do in an earthquake.

    Law of unintended consequences.

  6. Amino Acids in Meteorites says:

I wonder what it will take for California to come out of the world of fantasy it is living in?

    • Blade says:

      The Big One?

Nah, even that won’t do it. They will expect a trillion dollars in aid (not loans) from other states to rebuild their state (and simultaneously zero its budget deficit) a de facto bailout.

This state needs to be ejected from the USA before the Big One hits. I have often suggested selling it to the highest bidder, perhaps to China in exchange for the return of long term treasuries.

What a hoot that would be.

      • It would be better if we were ejected… We could keep Our federal tax money and be a filthy rich country while you live on corn. Then we could also ask for your passport and deport you and all the other narrow minded folks who come here from “Arm Pit USA” when your visa runs out. How’s that for California liberal peace and love? 🙂

        • there is no substitute for victory says:

The reality will be that the Oklahoma Highway Patrol will man roadblocks and turn all of the Cokies (Californians instead of Okies) back at the Oklahoma state line.

California is fast becoming Margret Mitchell’s Georgia or “Old South” from Gone With the Wind. You can’t eat bike paths, car pooling lanes, or rock climbing walls as some of our Left Coast aristocrats seem to believe. And people like coletta-hughes needs to remember that her water supply is venerable to massive long term disruptions with only a minimum of effort.

But by only going back to the 1900 census Ms. hughes will no doubt find out that California was once one of the most retched of states, poorer than Alabama and with a population only a tad larger than the 1900 population of Kansas. If its happened in California before, it can and will happen there again.
