Obama: Public is ‘sold’ on tax increases in a debt-ceiling deal
President Obama on Friday kept up the pressure on Republicans to agree to revenue increases in a deal to raise the debt ceiling, claiming 80 percent of the public supports Democrats’ demand for tax increases.
“The American people are sold,” Obama said. “The problem is members of Congress are dug in ideologically.”
Disrupting the Borg is expensive and time consuming!

The big OH never polled me!
He is gone the next election, just like Juliar down under. So the end is really near. lol
Again, we see the mental stability of this man being in an obviously delusional state. Raising taxes during a recession isn’t helpful and would only exacerbate the suffering of the working poor in this nation.
Washington will spend $2.6 million training Chinese prostitutes to drink more responsibly on the job.
The Department of Agriculture awarded the University of New Hampshire $700,000 this year investigating methane gas emissions from dairy cows.
A GAO audit classified nearly half of all purchases on government credit cards as improper, fraudulent, or embezzled. Examples of taxpayer-funded purchases include gambling, mortgage payments, liquor, lingerie, iPods, Xboxes, jewelry, Internet dating services, and Hawaiian vacations. In one extraordinary example, the Postal Service spent $13,500 on one dinner at a Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, including “over 200 appetizers and over $3,000 of alcohol, including more than 40 bottles of wine costing more than $50 each and brand-name liquor such as Courvoisier, Belvedere and Johnny Walker Gold.” The 81 guests consumed an average of $167 worth of food and drink apiece
The National Science Foundation spent $216,000 to study the use of “ambiguous” statements by politicians.
Federal agencies are delinquent on nearly 20 percent of employee travel charge cards, costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
The Census Bureau blew $2.5 million on a 30-second ad that ran during the Super Bowl. To make matters worse, the ad was almost universally banned, leaving most viewers uncertain of its meaning.
The Pentagon recently spent $998,798 shipping two 19-cent washers from South Carolina to Texas and $293,451 sending an 89-cent washer from South Carolina to Florida.

The Federal Communications Commission spent $350,000 to sponsor NASCAR driver David Gilliland.
Congress recently gave Alaska Airlines $500,000 to paint a Chinook salmon on a Boeing 737.
Washington has spent $3 billion re-sanding beaches — even as this new sand washes back into the ocean.
There are, of course, many more examples of this lunacy. Before any conversation about raising taxes gets started, these glaring wastes of the people’s money needs to stop. I don’t wish any member of American society to be soaked before this are eliminated. NOT ONE DIME FROM ANYONE!!
You like to cherry pick on every subject, don’t you. Such pathetic waste of money has been occuring for many decades regardless of the party in power.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjp6TpquWjc&feature=related
Yes, the ridiculous waste of money has occurred regardless of party and for much too long. How can anyone justify a tax increase with this madness continues unabated?
Cherry pick? I really don’t see how this is cherry picking. It is statements of known facts directly relevant to the discussion of additional taxation. I stated there were many more examples. And, I didn’t even supply my fav.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piss_Christ Federally subsidized. $15,000 1987. And the subsidy continues today.
I would encourage all citizens from all parties and concerns to call the White House and tell them we’re sick of this madness and seize the opportunity to lead with the House Majority and do something profoundly good for this nation and this nation’s generations to come.
He is lying.
Gallup has BHO’s job approval at 44%. He’s ignoring the recommendations of his own debt commission and has instead decided to go with smoke, mirrors and class warfare as his way of dealing with irresponsible spending. He has no interest whatsoever in running the government in a responsoble fashion. He could have raised taxes when Dems controlled the House and Senate but he didn’t. Why is raising taxes an issue for him now? Simple it suits his class warfare tactic because he lacks the leadership and executive skill set to actually deal with this countries debt crisis. We elected a likeable fop whose only talent has been his ability to write about himself and promote himself. When he is asked direct questions he goes into Abbot and Costello mode rendering his version of the “who’s on first” skit, and we’re left shaking our heads.
Yeah, he wouldn’t dare raise taxes when he had a majority government in both houses because it would look bad on them, now it’s split, he can play politics and blame the tax increase on the other side to avert disaster. Smoke and mirrors folks.
Polls says something different.
55%, a firm majority totally against any tax hike.

No question who is lying here.
Krauthammer: CALL HIS BLUFF
http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/call-his-bluff/2011/07/14/gIQAfzFyEI_story.html?hpid=z4
I swear, this administration just makes sh*t up, 80%, really?
A whole lot of carrying-on about this at Don Surber’s site. What Big O said was that (and I’m quoting from memory) “80% of the American people want a balanced approach.” So, what do dat mean, a trillion in cuts and a trillion in new taxes? That certain sounds balanced. Haven’t we tried that before? You know, G H W Bush broke his “no new taxes” pledge and signed a fat tax increase, promptly to be followed by no spending cuts at all. (More spending, I’m sort of sure.) Have the Dems managed to come up with any spending cuts (and slowing the growth of spending is not a cut)?
Disingenuous, extremely. He knows the TEA party Republicans cannot agree to tax increases, because TEA stands for taxed enough already. He knows that the tea party wing controls primary selection for GOP winnable seats, therefore Mr Boehner can’t agree to tax rises without losing his job. Playing chicken works if the other guy has something to politically live for if they swerve – in this case they don’t.
It is not Americans in general that want to pay higher taxes. It is Americans in general that want the rich to pay the taxes they used to pay. 80% is not necessarily an unbelievable statistic because 80% of Americans are not rich.
Remember the Eisenhower administration and its 70% tax ceiling. Remember how the middle class hardly existed before Ike but blossomed during his administration.
Oh never mind. The Kock founded Joan Bitch Society called Ike a communist. Some things never change.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=761DurYlDsY&feature=fvwrel
The middle class blossomed because industry did. The Government did not get in the way of everything industry did because it wasn’t “green enough.”
The Government also invested wisely post WW2 so that industry could flourish – as in the TVA and Pacific Northwest Bonneville power projects. At the time, the Government would have never thrown money at dead end activities like “wind mills” and “world’s largest solar panel operation” in California
The Rich still pays the most taxes.
Tell that to their tax accountant.
Blow – Why? The GOVERNMENT admits they do. Why do you insist upon lying?
Ill, why don’t you actually research some of the posits this administration is making. Google the flypaper theory. I usually avoid pejoratives, but you make it extremely difficult. You’ve offered no response to the wastefulness of spending and only wish to tax the rich. That’s fine, I’m familiar with envy. But, believe it or not, rich people of this nation are fellow citizens, too. Likely, they’ll pay more in taxes than you or I will ever recoup from services, but you say that isn’t enough.
So, you and others are envious of rich peoples’ possessions. You begrudge them yachts and whatnot. So what happens when you tax such people as to discourage their accumulation of wealth? You should google the Laffer curve and then Hauser’s law. Then understand that 15%-20% of much, is much better than 70% of very little.
As to your historical perspective of Ike’s tax rate, recall the recession that occurred during his time in office. That directly led to JFK’s election. Odd, that you would invoke Ike but failed to understand the Dem’s entire rejection of JFK’s most famous directive, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” The rejection is so much so, that there is an insistence that hard working citizens subsidize all of the garbage I’ve already listed and more. It is transparent what you and this administration is advocating, and it has nothing to do with fiscal responsibility nor the general welfare of this nation’s economic outlook. What the president is doing today is bordering on treason. He has a constitutional mandate to pay the debts of this nation. And I advocate Congress to take measures against his actions of threatening to withhold payments to our elderly and veterans.
What you are failing to realize, is that our expenses aren’t reasonable. Any raise in a tax rate for any class in our society is a negative effect on the GDP. Our poor benefit in a higher GDP as opposed to a depressed one. Which, happens to be occurring at this moment. And so, while, raising taxes on the rich may satisfy your envy, it won’t accomplish anything but a furtherance of difficulties on our poor. Mainly because liberals such as you an Obama fail to understand our wealthy don’t live in a vacuum. And the purpose of our government, which we seek to finance isn’t to punish successful people, but rather to establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, This, and only this is the mandate of our government.
Ill, the problem isn’t that we, or any class in this nation, isn’t taxed enough, the problem is we are spending too much. You think last election was bad? Just wait and see how bad it can get if Congress the the President don’t pull their heads out of their asses. The debt ceiling doesn’t need raised, the spending needs reined in.
I have no idea why you find financing aberrant behavior preferable to easing the financial burden of your fellow citizens, but I don’t believe that’s an attribute desirable to be emulated.
Blow – it has been demonstrated by all the news sites that the 80% is totally bogus. Why are you defending a bald faced lie? At BEST, Obama could have said that “73% are not opposed”, which would be kind of true (although still not true). But 80% is just a blad faced lie.
And just “who” is rich in your definition. Obama has stated in the past it is as low as married couples earning $150k. His policies indicates it is anyone paying taxes (since he said he would never raise taxes on the middle class, yet he raised taxes on people earning as little as $50k).
Pitting the lower and middle classes against the rich will probably work. With huge minority turnout, Obama will likely win re-election. There are simply not enough straight, white males to counterbalance all the “victims”.
Not really. Minorities don’t like unemployment (that the wrecking ball known as the EPA is causing) or $4 per gallon gas prices or power bills “promised to skyrocket” because of ineptitude and greenie group tantrums
– any more than anybody else
80% of the public wants what he says? Of all the public in America? Or of a certain segment of the population wants what he says? 96% of blacks voted for him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk5nZJhHA00
Yeah well, I sure didn’t. And neither did Jesse Lee (the above video) 🙂
Next time the black percentage will be lower. Also the total percentage will be lower (was 52+ last time).
I suspect he will get 47% overall. But he still has to lose those damn purple states to be sent home.
Notice that IWB left out John Kennedy’s tax policies. Next he’ll say we haven’t spent enough on fighting poverty since there is no less poverty today than when Johnson “declared war” on it. Instead we have two more generations after getting FDR’d being even more dependent on government for their existence.
Work hard. Millions on welfare (and others at the government trough) depend on you.
IWB was just being seld, out amogst the cherry trees picking the ripest of the fruit.
Everything that is done and said by this administration is done and said with the only goal being
re-election. I am 57 and IMO, Obama has surpassed Jimmy Carter as being the worst president in my lifetime. He has failed in foreign policy, failed in energy policy, failed in domestic security policy, failed in economic policy and failed as a leader in every way.
Agreed. I knew we were in for a Carter redux, but Obama goes beyond the pale. He has failed this nation in every way possible. An honorable man would step down, but he’s not honorable. His disgusting show of preying upon the fears of our elderly was the last straw for me. He knows damned good and well we have enough money to pay those people. He lied to some of the most vulnerable segment of our society. All in an attempt to preserve an unsustainable fiscal policy.
He is either full bore stupid, or his interest in the U.S. is confined to its destruction.
“preying upon the fears of our elderly”
If only he would follow through with that promise of not sending out Social Security checks on August 3rd! That would put the worst taste in people’s mouth—even with many, many African Americans. It would put a definite end to his reelection chances. But there is no way he will do it. He is not smart. But he is not that dumb.
“If you make under $250,000.00 you will not see your taxes increase by a single dime.”
~Barack Obama
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHlRY3kHhBk
And I thought the middle class was between 40 to 60 thousand $$$$
“I will cut taxes for 95% of all working families.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4d_5IrQSok
He has yet to cut anyone’s taxes. But he has raised them on many, just not the rich so far. Obama is incapable of telling the truth.
He cut many taxes. Have you completely forgotten about the 2009 stimulus bill? 1/3 was tax cuts. And Republicans even admitted that cutting taxes didn’t help the economy when they said only a small percentage of it was “actual stimulus”. And did you miss when Obama signed on for extending the Bush tax cuts and even making some deeper?
The rich people are doing better than ever, but Republicans don’t want them to sacrifice anything to help the country, and in fact want to GIVE them benefits in the form of more tax cuts while they call for cuts in Medicare and other services.
Selective memory on your part? He did not “cut” taxes. He gave you a holiday. They went back up in January. Do you not work for a living? if you did, you would know that simple fact (and not resort to stupid talking points).
Extending the Bush tax cuts is not a tax cut. See the first part of the sentence? Extending? They are Bush’s tax cuts. More talking points from the clueless.
As for the Rich, they pay over 50% of all taxes. The bottom 50% of wage earners pay only 3% – so who is doing well? Again, with the talking points. Do you actually do any research or just bleat what your masters tell you to?
As for medicare, again with the talking points. If it is funded through taxes, it does not need to be cut. Medicare is going broke because of medicaid. So you have 2 choices. Raise Taxes (on EVERYONE) or cut benefits. but that is not the republicans. It is the president. Since that is a mandate, and not discretionary. Since you do not work (and only leech off of society), you would not see that line on your pay check (equal to 1.45% of your pay matched by your employer – so that means workers are paying almost 3% for medicare/medicaid). To Fix it, you either have to cut benefits or increase taxes. Why? because it stopped being an insurance program and has become another welfare program. how? Obama.
Oh great clueless one – do you have a post it note on your nose that tells you “breath in. breath out”? Apparently you know nothing other than what your masters told you.
