Why Do Flood Plains Flood?

The Gulf Coast states owe their existence to many massive floods on the Mississippi River, which deposited the thousands of feet of sediment which their cities and farms are built on.

That is why some leading climate scientists tell us that floods on the Mississippi are caused by CO2. Because they actually don’t know anything about science.

lol……..yeh, I’ve often pondered the same question. It’s trick to understand why flood plains flood. Its prolly the dreaded droughtflood kicking in!!!

I still get a kick out of Key West moving NW faster than sea rise…………LOL

    • suyts says:

It is funny…… we’re discerning sea-level rise by measuring moving rocks. I guess its possible, only if we’re sure they are moving at exactly the same elevation. Surely moving rocks won’t move up or down even a millimeter or two……..

I know you meant geography, Steven.
Why would they, they think life’s perils have been removed.
    The Government tells them so.

Even so, flooding now is much worse. The Mississippi River is now getting ten one in five hundred years floods per decade instead of the usual eight or nine.

Firstly, we are still building new levees along the Mississippi and its tributaries, further restricting the floodplains and causing higher crests. Secondly, our constant paving and channeling causes more runoff. Thirdly, so-called ‘500 year’ floods are not. I know because I lived on the floodplain for eleven years (during the great flood of 1993) and had just spent eight years as a geology student.

I know people who still work on the levee system around St Louis. Check the Corps of Engineers plans for future levees, they are not finished yet, floods will get worse.
