I really hope Mekel didn’t make up this story just to stir the s**t.
Why do you hate Man.U? Remember Munich 1958.
Yes – sadly, many of the United fans I know from way back (I’m a City fan, brought up a bus ride from Maine Road, and old enough to remember Munich; it was a tragedy for Manchester, not just United) acknowledge that the club has milked Munich, Torino, who lost their whole squad in a plane crash in 1949, are not treated the same way as United.
As a City fan, I can tell you that before Ferguson, the climate between the two clubs was far more amicable. Here, for example, you can see Matt Busby congratulating Joe Mercer on winning the league, and Mercer in turn wishing Busby good luck in winning the European Cup – http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18034222#asset. I gather that Ferguson couldn’t be bother to contact Mancini and congratulate him.
A story re Munich. At one Old Trafford derby not that long ago, City fans, seeing that United had put up a United Credit Card stand right below the Munich Memorial, complained and it was moved. Not United fans – City fans.
I fail to see why Munich means everyone should like United. The reason so many people dislike them is that they are a dislikeable club. End of
Clubs like Liverpool loaned players to Utd after the disaster.
Jeremy, you are right. In those days, people like Matt & Joe were gentlemen and behaved as they should. Unfortuately, Matt`s shadow fell on Wilf McGuiness and Frank O`Farrell. As time went on, managers got more mouthy and arrogant; I never liked Malcom Allison, or, Tommy ¨the rotter¨ Docherty, or Ron Atkinson, who I saw play for Oxford United as centre half, nickname ‘Tank’.
I grew up within earshot of both Maine Road, about a mile away and Old Trafford, about three. I remember one time when I was a kid, standing outside my mother’s house, when there were F.A. cup ties at both places; everytime there was a goal, or a near miss, I could hear both crowds roar – this was Whalley Range. There wasn`t the greed for profit then, as far as I could see; it cost me 1s6d to get in OT, half a crown for an adult; doubt I could afford to go there now.
