2012 Was Not The Hottest Year In The US

NOAA has finally gotten their 2012 data set (almost) complete, and it turns out that 2012 was the second warmest year in the US after 1921 – and was slightly warmer than 1931 and 1934

They claim that 2012 was the warmest (by a large margin) because they tamper with the data before releasing it to the public. NOAA subtracted almost 1.5 degrees from the measured 1921 temperature.

CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES Climate Summary

Most of the anomalous warmth in the US during 2012 occurred during colder seasons, and was manifested by mild winter and springtime temperatures.

I’d like to know just how many millions of square miles of asphalt and concrete we have surrounding those weather stations now, as compared to pre-WWII, when we had the 17th largest military and grass runways.

2012 is not even worth mentioning. Very average.

I was a nice winter. I am sure M4GW were happy with it.

  3. Andy DC says:

If we cannot break a 91 year old record, it is hard to imagine that there has been anything remotely close to catastrophic warming, which would require huge taxes and Government interference with business.

  4. Rosco says:

Averaging – so beloved by climate science – often allows one to get away with complete BS.

Mild warm winters with average summers produce an average that is higher and allow one to say the year was warmer than average without any single maximum temperature during a summer being anything other than average.

I agree that people need not be afraid of the claims of extremes by climate scientists – almost always their claims involve average summers and warm mild winters.

Whilst people obviously like snow a mild winter must be preferable to being trapped below huge snowdrifts – surely.

There’s always the beach and water skiing.

  5. Have you got the last 4 days data that was missing, Steve?

I live in Central Michigan, and the weather in 2012 was hot year round: a mild winter with very little snow followed by a scorching hot summer – I was walking around in my underwear a lot of the time at home. I spent some time in the Upper Peninsula (Schoolcraft and Marquette counties), and the weather there was very hot too while I was there.
