Activists arrested at White House protesting Keystone pipeline
Shortly after noon, D.C. police began arresting the protesters, who included actress Daryl Hannah as well as prominent climate scientist James E. Hansen, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune and civil rights veteran Julian Bond. Some of the activists tied themselves to the gates with plastic handcuffs; others sat and refused to budge despite officers’ multiple requests. Bill McKibben, co-founder of 350.org, which has helped galvanize significant grass-roots opposition to the plan, said Obama cannot ignore that the carbon-intensive process of extracting crude from Alberta’s oil sands will destabilize the planet. “Whether it’s convenient or not for our politicians, this is the test,” McKibben said in an interview before being arrested, adding that Wednesday’s protest and a climate rally slated to take place Sunday in Washington were designed “just to keep this in front of people’s minds. .?.?. This is the first environmental issue that’s brought Americans into the streets in many, many years.”

Apparently Arab oil is better for the climate than Canadian oil.
What stellar reporting from the Post! Not a single interview with anyone but the ‘protesters’. Way to balance that subject matter!
I guess none of them were aware that Barry is out of town.
The only Americans “in the streets” are these handful of over-priviledged loonies.
Is that a Daryl Hannah mask, or Daryl Hannah?
its too bad, that local gas stations could refuse to allow them to fill up their tanks…or have gas/elecitrical companies cut them off…see how quickly they cry “uncle”
All that human shaped carbon shifting is going to destabilize the planet.
It is intelligent and mandatory for humanity to use fossil fuels to melt steel and glass at this point in time. Let us develop our technology until we discover another “socially acceptable” form of energy that will allow us to continue the advance of our civilization… provided we don’t blow ourselves up due to some stupid ideological foolishness.
They should never have arrested them. Just let them stay there chained up, like children throwing a tantrum, until they have had enough and need to go to the bathroom or to Starbucks and warm up. They are mentally 6 years old and like a child demanding their way, without regard to everybody else.
Exactly. For every plastic handcuff, add a real handcuff.
Play a video of Niagara Falls for their viewing and listening pleasure 😉
Given the close zoom in on the photo it’s likely not many people showed up. Perhaps 40?
Someone counted 34 in the picture, so 40 would be close.
Stop the presses!! Actually, it’s just a tad bigger. First, our man on the scene McKibben tweets how he “feels” today’s protest is an indicator of the big crowd coming for this weekend’s mega-rally ( https://twitter.com/billmckibben/status/301820571996524544 ), and then blesses us with a wider shot at his DailyKos report of the event, where we see…. ummm….. maybe 52 or 53? http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/02/13/1186921/-Notes-from-the-paddywagon-Keystone-is-the-test
But how many of McKibben’s group are tourists just gawking?
Reblogged this on Climate Ponderings.
Some of the activists tied themselves to the gates with plastic handcuffs
Right … plastic handcuffs … made from oil.
They would have used hemp but they smoked it all before they got there…
Instead of arresting them, the police could have used real handcuffs to replace their oil-sourced plastic ones, confiscated their hats, coats, gloves and shoes, and left them there. They would soon value the warmth of oil/gas/coal heating.
I hope one day to be rich enough and smart so I can do stupid stuff like this and not be embarrassed.
“Apparently Arab oil is better for the climate than Canadian oil.”
..and coal burned by China and India doesn’t have any effect, either.
No, no, you don’t get it. We are supposed to be the “leader”, set a “good example” for the rest of the world, and they will follow… ROFLMAO
The greatest “crisis” ever faced by mankind, according to Gore and only 40-50 people show up? Where was the 97% of scientists? Apparently it wasn’t worth their time. Some people require an enemy, a cause and a boogyman in order for them to have a stage to morally preen. It’s their equivalent of going to church on Sunday.
What do people here think of U.S. approval of CNOOC’s takeover of NEXEN, which gives China access to Canadian, Gulf of Mexico, and North Sea oil? http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/12/us-nexen-cnooc-idUSBRE91B0SU20130212 and http://www.calgaryherald.com/business/energy-resources/CNOOC+billion+takeover+Nexen+clears+final/7952675/story.html?__lsa=dee4-7781 Are you kidding me? This committee is loaded with Obama appointees. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_on_Foreign_Investment_in_the_United_States This is a national security risk (China can spy on naval bases in the Gulf), environmental safety risk (China has a poor safety record), and releases CO2 just as much as if Americans drilled used the oil. This process was not transparent, and shouldn’t we have an idea about what the U.S. got out of the deal? Remember, the Chinese oil company is state-owned.
Furthermore, failure to build the Keystone XL pipeline is costing the U.S. thousands of jobs, $billions in tax revenue, and $billions more in trade deficit to unfriendly countries (e.g. Middle East, Venezuela).
Remember taxpayer-funded loans to Brazil to drill for offshore oil? I wonder how much George Soros benefitted by the deal with Petrobas – reliable facts are hard to come by on the internet.
Forth time for Hansen?
Sometimes the idea of extending the “three strikes and you’re out” seems really good.
