Jeff Masters Explains NOAA Extreme Weather

Last January, the weather in the Eastern US was picture perfect. NOAA calculated this lovely weather to be the third most extreme in history.

This year, the weather has been much colder and stormier – which is much less extreme than last year’s mild, calm weather.

the U.S. had its quietest month in nearly two years during January 2013, according to NOAA’s U.S. Climate Extremes Index (CEI).

  2. The problem is that they are defining a warm mild winter as extreme because a cold harsh winter is more the norm. So the definitions have certainly become Orwellian.
