And consider, too, how our AGW friends love to equate Intelligent Design with creationism, where as near as I can tell, the two are not even remotely comparable.

It’s rather like a game in this universe: start with some (relatively) basic rules, set it in motion and see what happens. In the case of alarmists, I rather expect they’ll sooner or later draw the “Go To Jail” card (metaphorically or literally).

I’ve had to admit to myself–we know nearly nothing about how the Universe really works; taking an absolute stance for or against a designed universe is foolish. We just don’t know enough.
And I’m trending toward “designed”. It’s just too damned organized and intricate to be pure accident.

I tend to sympathize with scientists who understand that we don’t know everything, and that in fact as far as the big question… we don’t know anything, and that is why are we here? And why is anything here? Basically this precludes an atheist position. And the idea of Intelligent Design dates back centuries, it is argued that a designer’s fine handiwork is evidenced in the exquisite details of nature, though modern scientists do claim that the Intelligent Design argument is superficially attractive but ultimately specious and debunkable. I don’t know the answer. But Russell has a major point that Creationism and Intelligent Design are different things altogether. Nevertheless, I tend to think it is a bad idea to broach religious topics on a science blog, especially when a key but bogus argument the warmists make to discredit skeptics is that we are largely driven by religious belief. A good and touching point about Einstein is made here. But it shouldn’t take an Einstein to realize that we ought to keep science and religion far apart particularly in this case as there is no way that we win brownie points by doing that. In fact we lose points, there’s no other way of scoring it.
Intelligent design seems to evoke the infinite regression question of what designed the intelligent designer. Another point to consider is that evolution is not incompatible with intelligent design. The intelligent designer simply designed a system that evolves. The intelligent designer presumably created a set of universal physical laws that produced the universe that we observe. So why can we not just dispense with the intelligent designer explanation and say that we just don’t know the answer and possibly due to our life form limitations, we may never know?
I think where people get wary is when the creationists present themselves as “intelligent designers” as a toe hold into espousing their own dogmas. Intelligent design is the official position of the Catholic Church, for example. If you’re not an atheist or at least agnostic, then you’ve got to be at least in the intelligent design camp.
I’ve found hard core evolutionists to be in the same camp as hard core warmists. I could care less if ETs played a role in creating us. The truth is that we don’t really know everything no matter how hard or how much work we put into it. I’ve often joked that ETs are gods (see Genesis 6:2 or whatever about sons of god mating with daughters of earth). Of course, hard core religious people did not like that.

It applies equally to All Parties. Nearly all politicians are infected by this disease left or right, bleu or red or whatever color. They don’t represent the people, they live in another world and we are not invited.
