Report: Global warming didn’t cause big US drought
WASHINGTON (AP) — Last year’s huge drought was a freak of nature that wasn’t caused by man-made global warming, a new federal science study finds.
Scientists say the lack of moisture usually pushed up from the Gulf of Mexico was the main reason for the drought in the nation’s midsection.
Thursday’s report by dozens of scientists from five different federal agencies looked into why forecasters didn’t see the drought coming. The researchers concluded that it was so unusual and unpredictable that it couldn’t have been forecast.
“This is one of those events that comes along once every couple hundreds of years,” said lead author Martin Hoerling, a research meteorologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “Climate change was not a significant part, if any, of the event.”

This guy needs to read a bit of history or study “Climate” on this world!
Hoerling might have been referring to this:
“..lack of moisture usually pushed up from the Gulf of Mexico ..”
If the moisture for the drought stricken areas can’t come from anywhere else, I’d say you’d be right. In any event, I wouldn’t be surprised if some alarmists start spouting “yeah, but this time it was global warming that done it”.
That is a long term weather pattern that repeats in an approx. 60 year cycle. Think PDO, AMO interaction that controls weather patterns in the middle regions of the nation. The tracking of tropical depressions is related to the conditions of the Jets and the PDO and AMO. There are many more factors that are involved but history shows that drought is a normal condition at times shorter than hundreds of years.
Looking closely at weather patterns moving across the country I noticed the moisture was not pushed from the gulf but rather it is “Sucked” from the gulf by cold fronts associated with low pressure systems crossing the country. The tropical systems get mixed in and turn Northeast to track over the region and distribute needed precipitation.
Seth Borenstein was the author of this piece, who is one of the all-time alarmists. Even though he did feel compelled to quote Kevin Trenberth who dependably spouted the party line, it was late in the article.
The Economist magazine (March 30) notes the globe refuses to warm and discusses possible flaws in the models, and now this from Seth. Hell must be freezing.

NOAA must’ve finally got their check from Big Oil.
The Associated Depressed published this? Seth Borenstein wrote this?
Amazing!
We know where Martin Hoerling stands on climate issues.

He he……
They still haven’t explained one of the highest US harvest in history in the midst of the “worst” drought in 200 years. How about T.O.O, Gina, Appell?
http://southeastfarmpress.com/grains/2012-us-corn-crop-gets-high-marks-quality
“U.S. corn farmers have a great story to tell. Despite enduring the worst drought in five decades, we have produced one of the 10 largest corn crops on record and continued our commitment to improving the quality of the corn we grow.”
“The overall quality of the 2012 U.S. corn crop is high and improves upon last year’s very good marks across a range of test factors, according to the U.S. Grains Council’s Corn Harvest Quality Report 2012/13.”
Ya mean T.O.O.L. err something! 😆
Maybe it’s because the corn has been genetically modified. Although I’d be a little surprised if Appell wasn’t against that too. Cranks tend to be invested in more than one crankism at a time.
It was caused by a lack of hurricanes.
