Biofuel driven vehicles= the same or upto 4x more CO2 emissions.

I don’t have a mental block about electric vehicles and at equivalent 195mpg this little buggy has merit. From the fun point of view I’d rather ride a motorbike but that means rainproof clothing and for a stylish woman that’s going to be a problem. Say that by November 2016 gasoline hits $8/gallon, which seems quite probable. Would you stand on your pride or would you switch to electric?

sunsettommy I went to the Myers Motors page and for this tiny little vee-high-kul they want $27,500 and that’s nett of the $2,500 federal subsidy. Now say that for $10,000 you can get a pre-owned BMW 3-series with all the extras. You have to drive a HECK of a lot of miles to make up the $17,500 price difference. (And that’s why I always drive pre-owned cars.)
This isn’t a matter of pride. These vehicles remain little more than glorified golf carts. Every guy loves electronic gizzmos, so I would love to have an electric….but there is little I could do with it…. kind of like the extra 12 sets of speakers I can’t seem to quit buying.
I had to switch employers, and now commute 60mi each way every day. I bought a Hyundai Elantra, and easily exceed 40 mpg highway. I make a good living, and could easily drive an SUV, or a luxury sedan. I just like the fact that my transportation doesn’t cost much, and it’s new and reliable. And I can seat 4, and it’s quite comfortable.
If I get another vehicle, I’ll get an H2 with monster tires so I can spin brodies and run over tents at green festivals. đ
Traitor in Chief, here’s the interesting thing about Myers Motors. The car in the video is a prototype and the driver is probably a model not a real gen-u-whine owner. When they have pre-paid orders for 100 vehicles, and at least 1 million in the bank, they will commence manufacture. On TV there are lots of shows about venture capitalists, which make me an instant expert, and it seems to me that a good idea should easily be able to raise 1 million dollars. Something not quite right is going on here. I strongly suspect that the real manufacturer is in China; their price is based on a run of 100 units minimum and they want cash up front. There’s good Chinese as well as bad Chinese (everything I’m wearing right now right down to the reading glasses is probably Chinese) but there could very well be quality issues.
It’s not a question of pride – it’s the fact that I can’t shake this image of little bits of green plastic wrapped around the rear axles of an 18-wheeler.

So unless the electric car is driven a lot, it will never get ahead environmentally. And that turns out to be a challenge. Consider the Nissan Leaf. It has only a 73-mile range per charge. Drivers attempting long road trips, as in one BBC test drive, have reported that recharging takes so long that the average speed is close to six miles per hourâa bit faster than your average jogger.
To make matters worse, the batteries in electric cars fade with time, just as they do in a cellphone. Nissan estimates that after five years, the less effective batteries in a typical Leaf bring the range down to 55 miles. As the MIT Technology Review cautioned last year: “Don’t Drive Your Nissan Leaf Too Much.”
If a typical electric car is driven 50,000 miles over its lifetime, the huge initial emissions from its manufacture means the car will actually have put more carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere than a similar-size gasoline-powered car driven the same number of miles. Similarly, if the energy used to recharge the electric car comes mostly from coal-fired power plants, it will be responsible for the emission of almost 15 ounces of carbon-dioxide for every one of the 50,000 miles it is drivenâthree ounces more than a similar gas-powered car.

I went to a city last weekend that is about 110 miles one way taking about 1 1/2 hours to get there.While using the Electric car would take me TWO days to get there this making the trip worthless from the start because I have to be at work monday morning.

Unless someone invest a super-capacitor that hold as much energy as a tank full of gasoline, electric cars will never be practical. In fact, Raytheon in the development of a new type of submersible for the Navy, abandoned using batteries. They developed a mono-propellent fuel and are now looking for engines to utliize it.
you want an electric car, because there is not enough fuel in the ground for everyone on the planet. The math is quite simple. The only way that gasoline engine is cheaper is if you can permanently keep ~80% of present day population from driving, ever. As one famous man once said, you can accomplish much with a bayonet, but you can not sit on it.So, we need alternatives to the gasoline engine. As battery technology improves, something along the lines of Chevy Volt will become viable. To summarize, you want an electric car because there are more ways of producing electricity than there are ways of producing liquid fuels. Carbon dioxide has nothing to do with it.

Straight extrapolation tells you that the production of oil would have to quintuple to extend this rate of use to the entire population. To be sure, US is gluttonous. Even after efficiencies, the production would have to double on a sustainable basis. You think it can?
