New York is forecast to be 1F (-17C) tomorrow. If that happens it will be the coldest Valentines Day on record there. The previous record being 2F in 1916.

Now if we could just get him to lick a light post or something.
I tell ya, all this cold air may put a serious kibosh on Valentines day festivities.
Turns out when it is cold as a witches tit, that is the same temperature that will freeze a guy’s nuts off.
It is -20 F this morning with a 20-30 mph wind in Ottawa. I don’t believe with such a powerful advective blast that NYC and Boston will have any trouble reaching 0 tomorrow morning.
Forecast high of 14 F for today here in central Indiana. Tonight the low is forecast to be 4 and tomorrow a high of 24 F with 2-4″ of snow coming down starting tomorrow afternoon into the night. But we’re still warmer than they are to the east. Wind chills reaching -40 F for parts of New England.
This was the time of year we would be conducting winter warfare training in the Green mountains of Vermont back in the early and mid 80s when I was on a team in Co. A, 3rd Bn, 10th SFG(A). For two winters in a row for the 15 days we were moving around on skis and living out of rucksacks and being chased around those mountains it never got above zero and wind chills at night were normally -20 to -30. One night we had a wind chill of -90 F. No camp fires because we were tactical the whole time. The only external heat source was from a back packing stove and when you used it you had to dig a hole in the snow and put the stove down in it. Water was obtained by melting snow or ice most of the time since we would stay up above the level where streams still flowed under the ice if we possibly could.
You never took your weapons into the tent or any other shelter with you because even though it was still below zero in the tent the condensation from a couple of guys breathing would cause moisture that would freeze in the action and lock it up. We used graphite for weapons lube in those very cold conditions. We used leather Hagwag 3/4 shank alpine touring boots and slept with them under our heads to keep them from freezing so stiff you couldn’t get them on.
As a medic all of the injectables and ointments I carried were put into the sleeping bag with me to keep them from freezing along with my canteens. When moving I kept the stuff in chest pockets designed in the heavy Gortex winter parka where by body heat kept the stuff from freezing.
Underneath the parka we had a heavy Patagonia pile jacket and under that polypropylene underwear. We would safety pin a pair of our heavy wool socks on the underwear so they dried and rotate the socks we wore twice a day since even in those cold temps your feet would sweat during the heavy exertion of lugging 80+ lbs of rucksack through those mountains on skis. Seems like another life time now.
Record cold in February is cold.
I do not know much, but I know that.
The approaching storm geomagnetic 15-16 February causing even greater turmoil in the weather.

We have been told:
The odds are that what we can expect as a result of global warming is to see more
of this pattern of extreme cold. – – – Dr. John Holdren, The White House – 1/8/2014
What don’t you guys understand about that?
Oh, I don’t know. Maybe how anyone could be so stupid as to believe such nonsense from that idiot Holdren?
Exactly Rah, just what I was thinking.
I cannot understand how people can take any heed whatsoever of people who have spent their lives warning of imminent disaster, and been completely and spectacularly wrong at every turn.
I also cannot understand how and why there are so many people with no inclination or ability to think critically and for themselves.
The level of gullibility is astounding.
@ RAH. Thanks for being on the pointy end of the spear. De oppresso liber.

Much appreciated Windsong, but the fact is that Army SF gave back every bit as much as a soldier put into it. I will never regret having done it though now days as I have become a Sr. citizen I question how we did it. The human machine is amazing and can do so much more than one thinks it can. I guess one has to have the physical ability but to my way of thinking the key to becoming harder than woodpecker lips is the attitude.
What was that what I had said. It is cooling….
It’ll really be cold in places if those Shari’s Berries get frozen. LOL
Tired of all the Valentine’s Day ads on radio, guess we are finally safe from them for another year.
Well here we go again. Once again where the snows a blowing I’ll be going. Depart midnight tonight. Pickup new Pepsi cans in Findlay, OH. then get as far east on I-90 as I can, probably the Oneida rest area along the NY throughway. Take a 10 hour break and then drive to Ayre, MA which is WNW of Boston to deliver the cans. For there I dead head (pull the empty trailer) all the way up to Old Town, ME to pick up newly manufactured canoes on Tuesday morning for my backhaul. I see plenty of winter driving in my future Tuesday. At least I’ll be in a nice warm truck most of the time. I keep at least 5 days of provisions in the truck in case I get stuck somewhere.
You have to pay attention to the polar vortex in the lower stratosphere.
http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/70hPa/orthographic=-89.53,56.66,792
Here’s a tip when linking to earth.nullschool
Use a date in the url, so later it will go to what you were talking about at the time. (select the menu and clikc on the time controls, then fill in the date you want_
earth.nullschool.net/#2016/02/14/0000Z/wind/isobaric/10hPa/orthographic=-89.53,56.66,792
So instead of “current” you will see “2016/02/14/0000Z” in the url. (or just replace the ‘current’ with the date and time as it is shown)
Using the default link always brings up the most current map, not what you were talking about at the time.
Hi sfx2020, how do I get the legend and such back on my screen? It was always there and I could get windspeed readings and change the pressure setting and so on when one day it all just vanished. Now I get the map and the wind patterns, i can zoom in and out, but I no longer have the ability to make changes or take readings.
What did I do and how do I fix it? Can you help, please?
And I changed the level to 10hPa in my example, because it shows the polar vortex even better.
70 hPa polar vortex is more at peace with circulation of 500 hPa.

You’re welcome.
I’m sorry, and thank you very much.
No worries. I think the nullschool model is fantastic, and was thrilled to see you link to it.
Av temps in Anchorage dropped by a frw degrees over the past decade. Check it out. We are cooling from the top latitudes down.
Reblogged this on Climatism.
So. Are we all agreed then that the climate is changing? It is getting cooler….
Meanwhile, Europe was warm and… cozy. If you ask me, warmer than normal temperatures for February. One of the possible answers is here: http://oceansgovernclimate.com/valentins-day-cold-service-from-europe-again/.
