Heck, at least back then the weather actually seemed to lend a little support to their claims at times. Long remember the Blizzard of 1978! Thirteen hours of heavy wind driven snow for the northern half of the state. The Ohio River froze solid enough one could walk from Indiana to Kentucky. The lowest atmospheric pressure ever recorded in Indiana during the winter. Up near Cleavland OH, the lowest pressure ever recorded in a noncoastal state not associated with a tropical storm. The governor of Indiana declared every road in the state closed and declared a state wide disaster area for the first and only time ever. Bell telephone only allowed emergency calls. In my county, Madison, most north-south county roads were covered in snow so deep the plows could not handle it and it took front loaders to clear it. The National guard was using M-113 APCs and tanks to rescue stranded motorists and transport patients to the hospitals.
