In the past five years Russia has deployed 3 nuclear powered icebreakers – the most powerful ever built – supplementing 4 previously in service. 3 more are under construction and another on order. With another 3 dozen or so conventional powered icebreakers in service it appears the Bear isn’t expecting sea ice to evanesce any time soon.
