  1. glacierman says:

Is that a prediction, or a scenario? Was it quoted in a book or a magazine article? We should wait and see what Hansen says about this now because he is so often misquoted./sarc.

  2. Tony Duncan says:

    Steve,
you should check the book that the journalist wrote about his quote before being sure that Hansen said this.
I will only believe Hansen said this if a travel writer who has covered kilimanjaro confirms it!

Your last sentence should more likely read “Always remember – you are a scientifically illiterate sensationalist exaggerating lazy reporter if you quote scientists without bothering to listen to their actual words or read what they have actually written.”

  3. Tony Duncan says:

    Steve and Glacierman,

I wonder if you have heard of the term Skeptic? I don’t just believe something unless there is evidence to support, and there isn’t evidence that contradicts it. You should look into the concept.

    • glacierman says:

So, you are skeptical that Hansen made any such predictions?

      • Tony Duncan says:

        Glacierman

yes, I am skeptical Hansen made such predictions.

here is a admittedly second hand source of predictions from Hansen. I also admit it is from Climate audit, which may be a communist front organization, since they do not keep claiming Hansen said Manhattan would be underwater by 2008.

Still if one is able to gag and read what the article says, Hansen’s temperature predictions are no where near what the article quote says. See figure two in the article where it shows a slightly more than 1° warming from 1960 (really ’58 I think) to 2020, under. This under scenario A which Hanses said was not likely.

No if you can show me some documentation where hansen makes a huge turnaround between 1986 and 1988 I will consider that the article has some merit, and not think that it was just a lazy scientifically illiterate reproter who did not bother to actually listen to what hansen was saying.

I find it fascinating that Steve considers it DEFENDING Hansen when all I am doing is trying to make sure he is accurately depicted, so Steve can ridicule him with a clear conscience

      • Tony Duncan says:

        Steve,

the GREAT thing about Hansen is that he has so many verified statements and publications that you don’t NEED to rely on these inaccurate misrepresentations. if you need help I can point you to the actual things Hansen has said and written. No charge!

      • suyts says:

Tony, you amaze me. You’re only skeptical of Hansen quotes? But you’re not skeptical of Hansen’s verifiable manipulation of global temps. I love the logic! But where did Climate Audit enter into the conversation?

      • glacierman says:

James, I was shaking my head on the CA reference as well, but then I thought….WTF cares.

      • glacierman says:

Another James Hansen misquote from 1987 predicting a 2 – 5 degree C rise in temperature over the next 100 years, with 1 – 2 degrees coming in the next few decades.

I wonder what his models said the corresponding sea-level rise would be.

      • Steve, we don’t have any conclusive evidence that no-one has hacked “Tony Duncan”s computer. Since we don’t have any evidence that it’s actually “Tony Duncan” writing this tripe, we’d all be better off if someone deleted all the messages claiming to be from “Tony Duncan”.

      • glacierman says:

Hansen misquoted in 1981 using the atmospheres of Mars and Venus to support their predictions of the GHE on Earth. They say their computer models show that temps at high latitudes will be 2 to 5 times the global average. So the high latitudes should have warmed by 4 to 25 degrees by now.

We get bonus Schneider in this one as well.

      • J Calvert N says:

“The GREAT thing about Hansen is that he has so many verified statements and publications . . .” That’s so great! Hansen is definitely one of the greats!

    • glacierman says:

Hansen misquoted again in 1988 predicting a 1.6 degree C rise in temps under current emmissions. Well emmissions have increased dramatically, but temps? Obviously he was misquoted, or hasn’t pencil whipped his data yet to get the proper “tuned” result.

      • glacierman says:

Hansen misquoted again in 1989 stating that the Earth would warm 1 degree during the 1990s and should be 7 degrees warmer in the mid 2000s than it was in the 1950s.

      • glacierman says:

Hansen misquoted again in 1986 stating that temps would rise 0.5 – 1.0 degree during the 1990s then 2 – 4 degrees more during the next decade.

Too bad reporters just cannot understand this man.

      • Tony Duncan says:

        My My glacierman,

so MANY stories. You have been busy. I looked through a few, some actually DO attribute to Hansen things that Hansen actually said. See we have a record of his statements and publications. “this one appears to be accurate “1987 predicting a 2 – 5 degree C rise in temperature over the next 100 years, with 1 – 2 degrees coming in the next few decades.”
Some of the links you posted are obviously wrong. they are from mostly the same period and some have very different numbers. he did NOT give interviews to each of these papers. I also had trouble actually being able to read al the text as some was truncated.

But you have well illustrated that making claims about someone from articles in the newspaper, when they have very well documented positions on an issue is a rather silly exercise.

of course all this has nothing to do with the fact that Steve continues to promote the lie that Hansen said Manhattan would be underwater by 2008. In that particular case we .know all the facts and they make it very clear that Hansen did not say that

And I wonder WHY SUYTS believes I am not skeptical of Hansen’s claims? I have to my knowledge never stated that I believed them. As for the fraudulent manipulation of data, well he is a government employee and should clearly be prosecuted for that. Wonder why Cuccinelli has not done it?

  4. chris y says:

Steve, this newspaper article you found is a goldmine 🙂
It is important to note that this was based on a Congressional hearing in 1986, 2 years before the notorious Wirth hearings in 1988.

There are several other quotes that are at least as important as Hansen’s-

Ozone calamity king predicts end of human life, assuming greenhouse effect is not stopped (?!?). I predict the exact opposite, namely the end of human life if the greenhouse effect is stopped-
“If you have the greenhouse effect going on indefinitely, then you have a temperature rise that will extinct human life,” in 500 to 1000 years.
    Sherwood Rowland, UC Chemistry professor

Ozone calamity king admits utter lack of understanding on ozone hole, more than a decade(!!!!!) after EPA regulations of CFCs are passed based on ‘settled science’…
“Rowland, who in 1974 published pioneering research on chlorofluorocarbons- gases used as refrigerants and aerosol-can propellants. This led the United States to ban their use in spray cans, but it continues elsewhere. The scientists said they did not know why extreme signs of ozone depletion are first appearing in Antarctica.”

Remarkable what lies in the dust-covered aisles of newspaper archives. Perhaps some sort of proxy reconstruction could be developed to estimate the types of calamitous predictions made in earlier decades.

  5. Scarlet Pumpernickel says:

You forgot to put the Homer pic up again! This guy is destroying science and NASA GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR hanging out with Zombie protestors it’s crazy!

  6. Brian G Valentine says:

Worrying over nothing; tin foil hats are proven to protect people from”global warming”

  7. Justa Joe says:

TD, You admitted that Hansen is not beyond throwing out arbitrary time limits to convey the urgency of his “cause”. Once we acknowledge this everyting the guy says has got to held suspect.

  8. 1DandyTroll says:

Hansen seem to be rather famous for saying one thing in the tax funded house and a complete propagandist that wildly connects colorful dots that, apparently, always results in blown out of proportion anthropogenic catastrophic whatever, unless it seems the world embrace some sort of hokum socialism or another.

  9. glacierman says:

tony d. the only silly exercise is engaging you. hansen says one thing in published papers and scare? mongers the public. that much is clear in the record. quit defending the indefensible.

  10. free ipad 2 says:

GREAT REVIEW! I totally agree with all you said in your article, especially at the end of your article. Thank you, this info is very useful as always. Keep up the good work! You’ve got +1 more reader of your web blog:) Isabella S.
