Seventeen states issued heat watches, warnings or advisories on Monday, when the heat index easily surpassed 100 degrees in many places, including 126 in Newton, Iowa, and 119 in Madison, Minn.

I’m in Northern Illinois and the temp is currently 5F degrees above normal. I’m about to put my life on the line to go outside in this never before seen heat wave of the century. Pray for me that I will survive my round of golf. ;*)
Yeah, but the “heat index” adds humidity, because as is widely known by people who know these things, 100 degrees in Fla. is far worse than 100 deg. in Vegas–well, for tourists anyway.
The natives are smart enough to stay in the air conditioning.
I lived on the Gulf Coast of Texas and Phoenix for many years. 126 heat index at 98 is complete bullshit and can’t be compared to the historical record because people didn’t used to be complete pussies.

You are so right on. We haven’t even had a single really hot day in Phoenix so far all year. FGS wear a hat, drink plenty of water, seek shade, and enjoy the nice hot weather. I jog, bike and hang out in the heat it’s great and I know the humidity can be miserable in the south and mid-west. Get into an air-conditioned environment if you need. But really the complaints are just stupid, stop being such p*****s.
We used to wait until midnight to play basketball in the parking lot. ASU team soccer practice was at 3pm though, every day.

I lived in Vegas for over 50 years and did not have refrigeration in a house until the 80s and my work vehicle did not have “Air” until the early 90s The increased humidity with all the pools and water features caused measured temperatures of over 105 to become uncomfortable. It was not until later that “Heat Index” was even mentioned and we did not have heat alerts because + 105 was expected in the summer. Growing up I did not even wear shoes during the Summer walking around the desert or on the sidewalks.
My frat house at ASU did not have air conditioning. I also lived in Houston for a long time without air conditioning.
Grumpy – I do not wear shoes now. Not in snow, and not in the summer (of course for work and to get into stores, but not at home). However, when visiting relatives in Imperial Valley california in the summer when the temperature gets to 120, I do wear sandals. My feet are rough and calloused, but 120 dry heat is enough to burn them, while 100 with a heat index of 120 is still only 100 on my soles.
At least you guys with too much temps won’t have to worry about hurricanes in the USA.
Man made global warming has made them deflect away from the USA it seems.

Back in the day when I worked to pay my own way through college, I had a summer job working construction. Most of the time I was on ceilings in 115F degree heat inulating ducts, but for two months I insulated steam pipes in a facility where the temperature was 140F degrees. I used MAG-block which meant I had to be covered head to toe with mask and goggles. I got used to it and the thing I remember most was coming outside into the 85F degree temperature and shivering from the 55F degree temperature drop. It gave me a greater appreciation for the work my grandfather did shoveling coal into a furnace all day his entire life.
Now-a-days we have a bunch of girlie-men crying about 95F degree weather like it’s the end of the world. Manginas I call em! lol
I am kind of surprised they haven’t created yet another new measure to compound this scary ‘heat index.’
How about a greenhouse heat index (GHI) which also adds the CO2 concentrations? Since they are rising this GHI should keep rising too, as slam dunk proof that CO2 causes the Planetary Fever.
Just off thed top of my head I’d say the GHI for Newton would be about 136, maybe higher.
And all GHI would be unprecedented, at least for the first year or so. And they would make winters warmer all the time and everywhere.
The heat index needs to be upwards adjusted for the time of whining bias. People tend to whine earlier in the day than they did in the 1930s.
The heat index should only be used for reference like the wind chill factor. We’re going to see the warmists using the heat index to fool people because the term heat index is not well understood by the general public.
Oh give them a break! They are only emulating the grantologists they worship, and ‘extrapolating’ the temperature for your safety.

The 120 heat in 1936 can’t hold a candle to Newton’s 126 heat index. The heat index is a far more accurate measure of global warming than stupid raw temperature.
