Yellowstone Fire Cycle Undergoing Dramatic Change
In the past, the entire 20 million acre ecosystem would be completely burnt every 100 to 300 years. This time span over which an entire landscape burns, called fire rotation, is forecasted to be shortened to less than 30 years.
The trees require about 120 years to mature, so each tree will burn to the ground four times during its life.
