Some idiots (especially members of the press) don’t really know what an “assault weapon” is. An “assault weapon” is one capable of fully automatic fire – a machine gun. Such as a MAG-58, M-60, M-16, AK-47, Ouzi etc. Note that all fully auto weapons can also be switched to semi-auto.
A Colt AR-15 set to semi-auto is the same as an ACTUAL assault rifle M-16 set to semi-auto. Both operate the same as any SLR, semi-auto hunting, skeet shooting, semi-auto shotgun and handgun UNTIL you switch the M-16 to FULLY AUTO – that’s now an assault weapon, including the AK-47, Ouzi – illegal, and only for the police or military.
Semi-auto rifles with some plastic can be made to LOOK like assault rifles, however their internal workings are NOT fully auto capable.
Do not confuse semi-auto “magazine” or “link-fed” with “bolt-action” or “lever-action”. The latter two cannot be fired in a semi-automatic way. Each round requires manual cocking into the chamber first.
Notably, semi-auto rifles work exactly the same as hand guns – one pull of the trigger, one shot. All weapons used in the last few shootings using so-called “assault weapons” were NOT actually assault weapons, because they had no fully-automatic firing capability. They could have been hand guns and done the same damage.

While I appreciate Shapiro’s impassioned defense of owning AR-15’s based upon holding off future tyranny, there are good reasons to own one now.
Not everyone is a marksman, and even marksmen miss alot, especially when being fired upon. My 12 ga is good for taking care of a single intruder inside of my home. But if I have multiple intruders, and they are shooting at me from a distance of more than 40-50 feet, I want a high power rifle with a large magazine. Period.
American gangs constitute the 4th largest standing army in the world. My county police would be outgunned a thousand times over if the city thugs decided to descend upon us. Outgunned a thousand times over with illegal guns.

Assault weapons should not be restricted from ownership by law abiding citizens! Even SBR, Fully automatic, select fire or any of the other weapons that now require a “Tax Stamp” and special permission to own. If the military has personal weapons then citizens should also have the right to purchase them for personal defense.
