One measures the surface temperature. The other meaures the lower troposphere, up to about 10 km.
Why should they be equal?
They shouldn’t be. Global warming theory says that the mid-troposphere warms faster than the surface. Unfortunately for the scamsters, we see the exact opposite..
Where does the theory say that?
Over what time period?
Pretty bad when you can go to sites like SkS and see the following statement:
“…it is true that according to UAH and RSS, the lower troposphere is not warming as fast as we expect from models and atmospheric physics. Globally, climate models predict that the lower atmosphere should warm approximately 1.2 times faster than the surface. According to UAH data, the surface is actually warming a bit faster than the lower atmosphere…”

Don’t cite facts to Appell. They confuse him. I stopped being amazed at how utterly clueless he is on the theory he so passionately defends. Then again that’s what it takes to be a passionate defender.
He has money in this. It has nothing to do with science.
Unfortunately for the Warmists, the predicted mid-tropospheric hot spot in the tropics failed to materialize. Another failed model projection.
The CO2 doomsayers never will abandon their pet theory without a fight. There’s too much research money at stake, and their reputations (what’s left of them) are on the line. And there’s a gold mine to be made by Gore and his fellow investment profiteers in carbon commodities trading.

I realize that. Especially when SkS “discovered” that fact a while ago (27 December 2011), and it took an “environmental scientist” (dana1981) to see the light.
His reasons for the “divergence”?
“…1) Our understanding of atmospheric physics is wrong, and the lower atmosphere should not warm faster than the surface.
2) The models and physics are right, but the surface temperature data are biased high.
3) The models and physics are right, but the satellite temperature data are biased low.
At this juncture, we don’t know which of these explanations is accurate…”
It’s telling when TWO of his “excuses” assume that the OBSERVATIONS are wrong, and the MODELS are accurate.

In the previous post ,David makes the fantastic claim that two series which he agrees are diverging, GISS and RSS, are in agreement.

This is just further proof that global warming causes temperature gauges to produce divergent results.
And, of course, agencies like GISS and NCDC never bother to adjust for siting issues that elevate thermometer readings in urban settings, particularly near airports, buildings, pavement and HVAC equipment. The USHCN and GHCN truly are in need of an upgrade. One cannot “homogenize” away anomalously high temperature readings caused by poor station siting.
Pierre Gosselin has had some great stuff lately on the shift to Skepticism in Europe. The hull of the (not so good) Ship CAGW is more than cracked. It’s only a matter of time now. All the rats are jumping ship. Just like Hansen. They hope no one will remember their idiocy when the world looks back on this. Even the media faithful are manning the lifeboats. Gore will probably be the last buffoon to seek harbour.
And little Davey will be left conducting the band, wondering where everyone went, and why the deck is tilting.
