The world is getting warmer – and US scientists now know precisely how much warmer. They calculated the radiation from the sun, the heat reflected back into space, and the rising temperature of the seas and say the extra warmth is equivalent to a 1 watt lightbulb shining constantly over an area of 1 sq metre everywhere on the planet.
That would raise average temperatures by 0.6C before the end of the century, they report in Science today. Warming at that level, maintained over 10,000 years, would melt enough ice to raise sea levels by a kilometre.
“This energy imbalance is the smoking gun that we have been looking for,” said James Hansen, director of Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. “It shows that our estimates of the human-made and natural climate forcing agents are about right, and they are driving the Earth to a warmer climate.”

This is a remarkable claim by Hansen. I would suspect that the reporter slipped an extra zero into the sea level rise prediction, but The Guardian is never wrong, so that can’t be it.
Global ice is about 33 million km^3, which if melted, would raise sea levels by about 80 meters. The 3900 meter average ocean depth, when heated to just below boiling, would thermally expand an additional 164 meters. The maximum possible increase is 244 meters, a factor of 4 less than what Hansen claimed. In addition, the sea level rate of rise needed is 100 mm/year, a factor of 50 larger than what is currently observed.
But this all is meaningless, because Hansen already predicted Venus syndrome on Earth if we continue with fossil fuel BAU. That means the oceans will have boiled into the atmosphere in a few centuries, and sea level has no meaning.
But CO2 levels only rise AFTER the eath warms! Lets throw enough B.S. out there and people will believe it’s all their fault!! So just pay your carbon tax and let us fight global warming for you!! How you wonder? It’s a secret!
