As a result of the 1927 flood, 300 more miles of levees were constructed over the next four years, and existing levees were built higher. Another 400 miles has been constructed since and there are 220 more miles proposed at present. The result is a narrower channel through which future flood waters will have to move. And this does not include private levees that are constantly springing up to protect farm fields and new subdivisions. Our levee building is driving flood waters higher with each passing year.
So, what you are saying is that these so-called “record flood stages” are artificial? That these 1 in 500 year floods might only be 1 in 50 year floods?
Hey, I have a great idea….
…let’s call them 100 year floods, and when they happen every 20 years
We can say they are unprecedented….
I tried calling my truck “jaguar”, but that didn’t work either
