Sea Level To Rise 12 Feet In New Orleans – This Century!

Within the next 90 years, New Orleans could see an increase in sea level as much as 4.6 feet. At the same time, some areas of New Orleans – already below sea level – have been sinking an inch a year. These conditions give Louisiana one of the highest rates of sea submersion in the nation, the report said.

Amazing. 4.6 feet of sea level rise plus 90 inches of subsidence. More than one foot of sea level rise every eight years. They better start evacuating the city now. Property values will be worthless.

No, they won’t evacuate. They’ll sit there like lumps…..whining and complaining that someone isn’t doing enough to help them.

They can do something worthwhile with the place and turn it into a fish farm!

Is there something sinking faster than Nawlins?

    (now there’s a setup …)

  4. Gator says:

The biggest problem with this ‘scenario’, as I see it, will be the refugees streaming from the coasts. These areas contain high proportions of progressives, and they will be looking for higher ground on which to relocate and regroup. Thank God for the second amendment. ; )

Since glacial isostatic rebound of 0.3 mm/year is now being added to the sea level rise, it surely must follow that land subsidence must be subtracted from sea level rise. Otherwise, climate scientists may get the wrong impression that sea volume is rising faster than climate models scenariate.

So, 4.6 foot rise, corrected with a 7.5 foot subsidence, gives a predicted sea level rise in New Orleans of -9.8 mm/year. No wonder no-one seems to care…

    • Grumpy Grampy ;) says:

Louisiana is on the portion that sinks during isostatic rebound, being a region that was not covered by ice. Worse is the issue of being a delta region composed of sediment that is compacting with no new sediment being laid down to compensate / build. The relocation of New Orleans should have started as a works project in the 30s just like CCC, TVA, and other make work money wasting projects that really made the depression worse.

Oh, Grumpy Grampy, you no doubt remember the Great Depression from personal experience. But your economics is pretty bad. Not a shred of evidence that Roosevelt’s New Deal damaged the recovery — urban legend, all the way. Ask Keynes.

You might also want to review the events of 1936 and 1937. FDR reacted to the hard charge from the right-wing to “balance the budget because we’re spending too much money.” The results? We call it the “Roosevelt Recession.”

<a href="http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/feature/2009/01/02/sirota_fdr_depression"You could look it up.

And, contrary to most snarky sign-offs on such discussions, would you please let some facts get in the way of the rant? Thank you.

Thanks for providing a link to a revisionist group. Of course Roosevelt was one of their heroes.
Ed nice to see you made it through your vacation and came back to share your wisdom!
I did not experience the period personally but parents and grandparents did.
Social Security has been a government promoted pyramid scheme since it started and Medicare is a step child of the same thought processes. More people relying on government handouts.
There were some good projects but the wealthy got wealthier and inflation caused the poor to get poorer.

  6. Property values will decline in many coastal areas- especially those very close to a beach or wetland area near a bay or sound. New Orleans is probably one of the worst areas effected.

Climate change will also cause regions not near the coast equally bad problems. Heat, drought, and dust-bowl conditions will increase in the western Midwest, mid to lower great plains.
