The chairman of Vail says that skiing is unimportant, and that we must do everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint. The obvious answer is for the hundreds of thousands of skiers who travel to Vail every year, to just stop travelling.
Count me in the category of someone who is very worried about climate change, but also someone who tries not to look at every weather pattern as “proof” of something. But, maybe more than anything, you can count me out of the group that says we need to address climate change to save skiing. I feel this way even though I run one of the biggest ski companies in the world. The impacts of climate change are a serious matter and rightly deserve our attention. At Vail Resorts, we are on a path to reduce our energy use by 20 percent over a 10-year period and have engaged in a number of substantial forest restoration projects — all of which help to contain the impacts of climate change.
But to the folks trying to alarm people with images of melting snow, here is the dirty little secret: When the effects of climate change really show up, no one will care about skiing at Aspen and Vail. They will be rightly focused on the wildlife, natural habitat and people of our planet, about the sea levels, flooding and natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy.

I agree that folks should help him reduce his carbon foot print at his resort. If 100% of his customers stopped skiing he could drastically reduce his foot print and do a lot to restore the natural forest that was demolished to create the ski runs. He could do wild life a great service by clearing the structures off the site and letting it return to a natural environment.
There is not now, and never will be a shortage of visitors to Vail. This is just lip service to the brain dead.
Maybe they should get in their snow-cars, snowcats, snow-mobiles, snow-scooters, ski-doos, moto-skis, Muskeg tractors, John Deere Bucks and SUVs, fill up with gas before heading to the resort that does appreciate them.
Just a thought.
Vail has more snow now than they can handle. Yes, when the jet set stops traveling and doing without, we will know they are serious. But there is no indication that is happening anytime soon. Is is us peasants that are supposed to do without.
