1876 : Cyclone Killed 200,000 People With A 40 Foot Storm Surge

The highest storm surge from a Bay of Bengal cyclone is reputed to be the 44.6 foot (13.6 meter) storm surge (Shrestha, 1998) attributed to the Great Backerganj Cyclone of 1876.

The Great Backerganj Cyclone of 1876 (October 29 – November 1, 1876) was one of the deadliest cyclones in history. It hit the coast of Backerganj (near Meghna estuary) in present-day Barisal, Bangladesh, killing about 200,000 people, half of whom were drowned by the storm surge, and the remainder died in the resultant famine.[1][2]

    Global warming is now over as judged by this current snapshot of global SST’s.
    Notice the cool anomalies surrounding Nova Scotia. In October, when anomalies there were warm, that was global warming’s signal. Now that those anomalies have become negative is that global cooling’s signal?
