“Warming” in the Arctic? Now there’s a phenomenon thingy……. an opportunity beckons. For Wal-mart, a new line maybe, selling swim wear, Bermuda shorts and muscle T shirts [polar bear logo] – for
balmybarmy days in the Arctic ocean basin. And, Roll up, roll up, Al Gore – selling beach front property on Baffin Island.
From the Anchorage Ice Desk:
“FORECAST THROUGH SATURDAY…EAST OF 167W…UPDATED…NORTHERLY FLOW
WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MOST OF THE WEEK. THE ICE EDGE WILL MOVE TO THE
SOUTH 10 TO 15 NM TUESDAY…THEN 3 TO 6 NM TO THE SOUTH EACH DAY
WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY. THE NET ICE ADVANCE TO THE SOUTH WILL BE
25 TO 35 NM.
FORECAST THROUGH SATURDAY…167W TO 180…UPDATED…COLD NORTHERLY
FLOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MUCH OF THE WEEK. ICE WILL ADVANCE TO THE
SOUTHWEST 5 TO 10 NM TUESDAY…THEN ADVANCE TO THE SOUTH 15 TO 20 NM
EACH DAY WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. EASTERLY WINDS FRIDAY WILL MOVE THE
ICE TO THE WEST 5 TO 15 NM. INCREASING NORTHEAST TO NORTH FLOW
SATURDAY WILL MOVE THE ICE TO THE SOUTH 15 TO 20 NM. THE NET ICE
MOVEMENT WILL BE TO THE SOUTHWEST 35 TO 50 NM THROUGH SATURDAY.
FORECAST THROUGH SATURDAY…WEST OF 180…NORTHERLY FLOW WILL
DIMINISH THROUGH THE WEEK AND TEMPERATURES WILL BECOME VERY COLD. ICE
WILL INCREASE IN THICKNESS AND CONCENTRATION AND EXPAND THE ICE EDGE
TO THE SOUTH 20 TO 25 NM THROUGH SATURDAY. ”
Bering Sea-ice is going to approach and challenge the records sets just last year.
Then, looking at hemispheric plots, it appears very cold air on strong northerly/northeasterly winds will be pouring over the Barents Sea all week long as well. Total Nhemi sea-ice is within 400,000sq.km of the highest yearly maximums on all the sea-ice charts today. It appears that by this weekend we’ll be close to those years.
Arctic high pressure looks to persist over the high arctic in week 2 so sea-ice should continue to grow and thicken rapidly right until mid-march.
There is currently more Bering Sea ice than there was on this date last year.
Very true, but last year there was an overall record set for area in the entire cryosphere today period-of-record – roughly 10% higher than the previous highest year.
This year, as of two days ago, the Bering was only about 180,000sq.km or so away from last year’s highest total. So by this weekend, not only will it be higher than the same date last year, it’ll also be within a breath of last year’s record maximum.
Pretty amazing…
An addendum for the shills…
When I say “highest yearly maximum on all the sea-ice charts today” I’m referring to the main set of data charts showing comparisons of the most recent 5-8 years, depending on which chart is from which agency. Obviously, other years prior to recent times have had more sea-ice. But the bottom line is ice growth over the arctic this winter, and continuing into March, has been exceptional.
