There are ships there. They’re just taking a slight detour on the river Styx with Charon.

What!? The “Love Boat” must be dry docked with engine trouble again. So many disappointed cruisers, and Capt Stubing, missing the height of NWP tourist season.

A good time to invest in Northwest Passage Shipping Futures.
It’s gonna open up any day now.
    I can feel it.

  4. miked1947 says:

I see the ice breakers are busy in the Northeast keeping that region open!

Isn’t it about time for another publicity-hounding stunt trip to the North Pole by kayak or rowboat?

Weren’t they trying that crap again recently in Toasty Antarctica, but one doctor froze his fingers in a practice hike and was pulled from the fiasco ? There’s a reason cities don’t exist down there. Some never learn.

There’s a French weather ship up there, callsign ‘FLAO’, a 15 meter yacht called ‘Vagabond’ which has been recruited as a weather station for Meteo France and the ECMWF. It’s in Grise Fiord on Ellesmere Island.

If you go to the page below you can print out plots of air temperature and air pressure. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts uses the data to check its forecasts. You can also generate a report which shows the differences between the ECMWF forecast and the observation. In the last month ECMWF did really well on air pressure – within a millibar, not so good on temperature, up to 10°C out on the 25th but generally within 5°C.

Sailwx.info says Vadibel – call sign 9LF7037 – is at the North Pole – 88N
Marinetraffic.com says Vabibel – call sign 9LF7037 – was last heard in the Persian Gulf 8 hours ago.

That’s a pretty impressive speed for a bulk carrier!

  8. Sleepalot says:

Sailwx.info says Topaz – call sign 9V6608 – is at the North Pole – 88N
Marinetraffic.com says Topaz – call sign 9V6608 – was last heard in the Persian Gulf 10 minutes ago.
Topaz is an “anchor handling vessel” (a tug that works in a port).

  9. Sleepalot says:

Sailwx.info says Sea Bay – call sign VRER9 – is at the North Pole – 87N
Marinetraffic.com says Sea Bay – call sign VRER9 – was in the Singapore area 16 minutes ago.
Sea Bay is an “oil products carrier” (an oiler).

The numbered dots are bouys, not ships.

  11. Not sure what the long exchange with Big Al was all about in the earlier thread. As soon as he said he didn’t care if he cited faked data, so long as it was “on message” about AGW, he lost me. Apparently, Isaac Newton faked his theory of gravity, so this sets an acceptable precedent for all academics to follow.

  12. Sleepalot says:

Sailwx.info says (ship name unknown) – call sign FLAO – is in port (NUUK) at 76 N. It seems to be a pleasure craft, that hasn’t moved for 2 years and is giving hourly weather reports. Bit of a strange one, that.
