Weren’t they trying that crap again recently in Toasty Antarctica, but one doctor froze his fingers in a practice hike and was pulled from the fiasco ? There’s a reason cities don’t exist down there. Some never learn.
There’s a French weather ship up there, callsign ‘FLAO’, a 15 meter yacht called ‘Vagabond’ which has been recruited as a weather station for Meteo France and the ECMWF. It’s in Grise Fiord on Ellesmere Island.
If you go to the page below you can print out plots of air temperature and air pressure. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts uses the data to check its forecasts. You can also generate a report which shows the differences between the ECMWF forecast and the observation. In the last month ECMWF did really well on air pressure – within a millibar, not so good on temperature, up to 10°C out on the 25th but generally within 5°C.
