Sunday Times Reports Record Ice Growth As Record “Melt”

Ice melt is worst in 1,000 years

THE melting of ice on the Antarctic Peninsula during the summer months is now at its highest level for 1,000 years, according to research. Scientists have for the first time been able to demonstrate that increasing temperatures since the 1960s have caused 10 times more ice to melt than in medieval times

Antarctic sea ice area has been increasing and above normal for more than 500 consecutive days, so the experts chime in with a claim of record melt.

The Weddell Sea (adjacent to the Antarctic Peninsula) had double the normal amount of sea ice this summer. That is because it was exceptionally cold.

Steve maybe I am tired and you are talking about 2 different things in one article. However I am seeing they are talking about ice on the land of the peninsula and you are talking about ice in the water. I do believe the peninsula is warming due to ocean currents around it. However the main continent has been cooling since the 1950s at least.

Snowed a little here in northern Colorado Springs last night looking forward to spring.

    • Explain how ice is forming at the warmer places (at lower latitude and elevation) and melting in the interior at the colder places (at higher latitude and elevation).

Ice is increasing around the periphery of Antarctica – because it is getting colder. This should be obvious.

Climate scientists make a habit of violating the fundamental laws of science, and it is very important that we call them on it.

      • Marian says:

        Yeah.

And Don’t forget. The entire Antarctic Peninsular isn’t warming as claimed, Its just the very tip of the peninsular. And of interest didn’t they find a chain of undersea volcanoes there in 2009/2010 they previously didn’t know of? Plus They also claim now because they’re BS artists. GW causes more ice in the Antarctic, while it causes less ice in the Arctic. 🙂

The Warmists are desperate to issue any claim — real or false — that will support their fraudulent and collapsing global warming theory. Those “scientists” pushing the AGW meme should be correctly identified as “science activists.” The and now-falsified theory they continue to peddle qualifies them as charlatans. They are addicted to research grants and publicity. They love making the headlines with their absurd predictions of global warming doom. Their model-based prognostications have failed miserably.

    • Ed Caryl says:

Not “science activists”, “political activists.” They are not doing science in any form.

    • nigelf says:

They have to outright lie now that nothing is happening as they said it would. And they may get away with it because none of us live down there and can see with our own eyes that they’re lying, and the media that should dispute this as part of their job is still in full-fellate mode with the doomsayers.

Steve I agree I just felt a little lost in article was up till midnight paying my federal tithe. See this link to the weather channel on US drought.

  4. Mariana Torres says:

I think the Economist Article has frightened the living daylights out of the team and there going full on pressure on cretinous greenie journalists to hammer the AGW whatever way they can LOL

  5. Mariana Torres says:

Actually Steve I believe, the first guy is right in the sense that volcanic underwater vents heat the water around the peninsula it certainly ain’t AGW although the warmistas conveniently don’t mention this, and yes antarctic ice is increasing significantly (P <0.00001) pretty dramatically due to falls in temperature. I venture to suggest that reduced solar is starting to kick in. BTW SH winter will be pretty extraordinary this year and next years NH as well.

The cult does not need to bother with pesky measurements when making Prophesy. The ice at both poles is melting at all times to record lows as long as they “believe in their hearts, and tap their heels three times”. Everyone else just needs to get on board the candy choo choo train to Paradise.

  7. Bill Illis says:

James Ross Island ice core data here.

As usual, the data tells a different story than the news releases.

I cannot find Weddell Sea ice coverage at Cryosphere Today (as they do for the Northern Hemisphere). Anyone have a link?

Regardless, it is journalistic malpractice for The Sunday Times to ignore the bigger picture and cherry-pick.

Failed predictions lead to bizarre behavior by these soon to be prisoners.
Their desperation will increase and the media will continue to look like the worst of scumbags!

  13. rw says:

What does “melting is now at its highest level” actually mean?

I notice that in recent weeks the “1000-years” meme is getting more and more exposure.

Also, are all those penguins I see in the Sunday Times picture that heads the article out there to see the melt?

  14. Timothy Dunlap says:

Nature Geoscience and the media are saying that the melting of (fresh water) glaciers has produced a layer of less-saline water on the surface, and this freezes at a higher temperature, to produce the sea ice. Also, Paul Holland of the British Antarctic Survey says that wind keeps
blowing the sea ice away from the coast, and this exposes/freezes more sea surface.

And, the increase in sea ice is “small.”

I’d like to see facts and figures. Like the temperatures, where the sea ice is forming. And, doesn’t Antarctica have strong winds blowing away from the coast every year, always? And,
what makes the fresh water ice hot enough to melt, while the sea around the continent is colder?

How do these people sleep at night? They have no ethics whatsoever!

  16. AlGorezila has been running an interview with the UK “climate scientist” promoting this all day . No mention of the word “peninsula” . Most bizarre to me was the claim that the “last 20 years” was 10x greater than any time in the last 1000 . What incredible resolution . And if it’s a melting , what data is there to observe ?

If it is James Ross Island , it’s not even in the Arctic Circle .

  17. Chewer says:

The peninsula is not connected by land and hasn’t been for at least 45,000 years.
It is connected by ice and rises into the southern ocean zone where the jet stream dominates a different climate.
The waste cases that have been spewing this BS have no idea about the factors driving world-wide climate, and if they could wrap their brains around an ever changing active planetary core and the spheres it creates along with cyclical solar & planetary functions, they’d feel enlightened or depressed if their goal is to handle man according to their delusions.
Inter-glacial periods are great, but they have other than noble intentions.

Nature Mag Admits: Recent climate, glacier changes in? Antarctica within normal bounds; Changes cannot be attributed with confidence to manmade global warming
‘Their new research suggests the ’90s were not greatly different from some other decades – such as the 1830s and 1940s – that also showed marked temperature spikes’ — ‘Recent climate, glacier changes in Antarctica at the ‘upper bound’ of normal In the last few decades’
