Funny but I’m pretty sure this is an example of Hoax Journalism. This is the journalistic version of tall tales. Back then newspapers didn’t and often couldn’t fact check so a lot of stories got printed that were created by the author. Both Mark Twain and Edgar Allen Poe got their start doing this.
