  1. Morgan says:

I wouldn’t count on Lake Ontario freezing. But there is a first time for everything…

    • Bob Greene says:

Surface to volume makes it unlikely. And freeze over depends on wind direction. My reporting stations in KZ and E. Lansing have said that they are certainly having winter lately.

    • Firepower says:

      Lake Ontario will NEVER freeze
Al Gore declared he wanted to walk upon its waters
      After Obama parts it…

    • denis says:

According to Al Gore, that’s a terrible true, it can not be or the people will laugh, even more, at me. Beside, it is my fault…..I invented the Internet and now it is against me with kind of news and reports that people can see at the second they are published. What a bad idea was from my side, who knew.

      • vacman says:

Sweetheart, why bring Al Gore into the debate. All we need is data. And the data is conclusive. AGW is a bigger threat then terrorism. Any questions???

        • Fred17 says:

          I hope you’re being sarcastic. 17 yrs w/o.

        • Mark Matis says:

          Suck on!

        • Mike Coager says:

Yeah, just like in the 70’s …we were all going to freeze to death from a new ice age! Qiut listening to politicians when it comes to real science and history. Oh, and you can include those junk scientists that you all keep talking about….with their fuzzy facts!

        • The Bobster says:

Ah, the lying “sweetheart” troll is back. We’re not you’re “sweetheart”, kweer, and we don’t believe your line of bull$hit.

        • JG1682 says:

          Questions? Yeah.

If you were Emperor of the World, and able to issue (and enforce) any edict to end “AGW”, what would you look for as evidence that your rules were working?

        • stonemike says:

Screwball, try dealing in reality, your radical progressive bosses hate reality, but hell, think fr yourself for once !

        • Dave Unvert says:

Well, we don’t know where terror will strike. And we sure as shit know that the low lying areas near water would flood IF the seas rise. So, I’m pretty sure we could adapt if it is real. We can NOT stop humanity from living surviving so stop keeping yourself awake worrying about it. Don’t buy a home in the Glades and you will be ok.

        • Connie says:

So sad that people have been brainwashed with this crap! Read your Bible the only global warming will come when the earth is judged! Than there Will be a lake of Fire until than we CANNOT destroy what we haven’t created it is a money scream and you tree huggers bought into it hook line and sinker!!

        • Chris says:

I have a question. Why do all liberal commenters not know the difference between the words “than” and “then.” They sound different, are spelled different, and have different meanings, so this one really has me puzzled. I recognize we all make spelling and grammar mistakes from time to time–but this one happens far to consistently to be a mistake or being too lazy to proof your comment.

      • average joe says:

Hasn’t gore said the tops of the lake’s are freezing because the bottom of the lake’s are boiling? That’s global warming

    • JohnG911 says:

Maybe the “first time” in your life time but so what. Polar bears were put on the endangered species list because of some environmental wackos claim that the north pole is melting. If this keeps up, we may see polar bears as far south as Washington.

      • JKuper says:

Just in case facts matter to you at all while you contemplate taking a position on an issue, the arctic sea ice is essentially at historic lows right now for this time of year. Check out nsidc dot org for the data.

        • tarheel says:

not for our south pole, its growing exponentially

        • Sorry Homer, this is a bullshit free zone.

The retention of more sea ice in September 2013 has increased the overall thickness and volume of the ice pack compared to recent years. Antarctic sea ice remains significantly more extensive than average.

        • Don Nolen says:

Were you born this stupid or have you spent your life working to attain this level? Why not use the New York Times as your source, or better yet how about East Anglia University>

        • mrfreeze says:

The “fact” is that “climate change” has been changing for millions of years long before the new green religion of global cooling in the 70’s to global warming rebranded to climate change in the 80’s and 90’s, The logic of all this is the mind numbingly stupidty in believing you can take 5 frames from a 4 hour movie you’ve see 1/4 of the way thru and predicting the ending. Think long term. Go to the library and try to do some extensive reading of the history of “climate change” before spouting more crap from the money machine called “climate change” sources. You sound like another low information lemming”.

        • Dave Unvert says:

hmmm, and antarctic ice is at extreme highs right now. I WONDER….wonder if this is something that happens …..n a t u r a l l y ….kinda a yin and yang thing. Like Ca. drought and freezing ass cold at the same time in the USA. it is called CLIMATE.

        • NK Dursam says:

just checked: Arctic ice increased 50% in volume in last year. Global warming, NOT.

      • 1389AD says:

LOL…by all accounts, polar bear numbers have been increasing even before this winter.

And they’ll eat any animal, including our own species.

        • Traitor in Chief says:

I wonder who would win in a cage fight between a Polar Bear and Bigfoot? Let’s throw the Goracle in the cage too just for amusement.

      • dan says:

Lake Superior is an ice -cube… and my avatar is a Polar bear..
It frose across at the head of the lakes twenty years ago,,,,but not even close
to current cover (or thickness)…or since I began observations in 1975.

      • Charles says:

Note: be sure to cook your polar bear meat very well after harvesting it from the northeastern USA (polar bears are full of trichinosis parasites). However, there should be plenty of polar bear supply in the U.S. as this species expands its habitat as the full brunt of global warming kicks in.

        • Greg kane says:

Does anyone know if Polar Bears eat liberals? I had heard they did, but them someone told me they stopped, because it was making their polar bear cubs stupid.

        • arpy2912 says:

I got to thinking that the way liberals are hardwired, the very act of breathing might be inversely
          proportionate to objective thought.

      • Fitz says:

        Oh we can hope.

      • Pete says:

Them making down to D.C. might even be a blessing if they were to quickly acquire a taste for politicians. It would pay to keep them around then.

      • arpy2912 says:

Polar bears as far South as Washington? It would be easier to vote for one of them than
the gaggle of goofs now running the place.

      • JB Abbott says:

But the north pole is melting. Check out the weather in Norway.
        http://www.wunderground.com/global/NO.html

    • Russell says:

Lake Ontario has frozen over 5 times in recorded history. It’s over 800 feet deep so it takes a lot of long cold periods to get it frozen over. Looks like this is it!

    • stonemike says:

I’d ove to drag al gore around the perimeters on his deranged face !

    • BenM says:

It’s man made global warming damxit!

    • Jim says:

I’m with you, Morgan. Despite the fact that Global Warming is a hoax, a gigantic money laundering share the wealth ponzi scheme, there is no way that Lake Ontario is going to freeze over. I back onto Lake Ontario in Bowmanville opposite Wilson, New York, and while we do get build ups of pack ice on shore, a freeze over just ain’t gonna happen. All of the other lakes dump into Lake Ontario, so you can just imagine how many chemicals are in the soup when they arrive here, helping to prevent a total freeze. I’d love to be able to walk the 32 miles to the states, but I’m not holding my breath.

    • Nys Parkie says:

I live in Niagara County about 2 miles from Ontario. 62 years and I have never seen her freeze. Don’t believe it will happen this year either. I am expecting a pretty lousy spring. How much will the lakes warm when they start? Could be a lousy summer also. We will see.

  2. billrow says:

This global warming is just getting out of hand.

    • Jo says:

I was just thinking that. I need a global hot cup of java and a log on the fire.

    • Robert Moody says:

We need to put a stop to all this warming before we all freeze to death.

      • Hey wait a minute, didn’t you hear what AlGore said? He said we’re freezing because we’re warming! Whatever that mean…..but it must be true if AlGore said it. 😉

    • Sean says:

global warming/ice age…….it’s all a direct climate change….might be an ice age…any less destructive to ……way of life/employment/economy….I think not……

    • JKuper says:

Exactly. Think about how global warming is causing the arctic to warm up. It weakens the gradient that keeps the polar air mass more concentrated at the northern latitudes. Thus, the cold air escapes down south more. So from your perception this apparently disproves global warming because the midwest and east have been cold this winter. While, from a global perspective, it is entirely consistent. Massive floods in the UK, record warmth in Alaska and Russia. Record drought in the southwest.

So for those that view climate change through a political lens, you get shallow, snarky responses to this news. For those that view it through a scientific lens and understand what the predictions were and how this all fits together, then we have a much more reasoned and rational response.

As a “conservative” I appreciate and understand the science but I disagree with the liberals that say that we must therefore grow the size of the government due to climate change. But all too many of my conservative brethren merely dismiss the science because of their political bias and this will end up hurting conservatism greatly in the long run.

      • Chris says:

Umm… no. Antarctic ice has been increasing and there is no warming of the arctic. Sure, you build a valid argument, but if the premises upon which that argument are built are false, we can not assume your conclusion to be true.

Yes, it sounds semi-logical to say that the freezing temperatures are caused by arctic cold being displaced as it becomes warmer, but firstly it is not true and secondly warming arctic temperatures would not actually make colder temperatures further from the arctic. You have bought into all the smoke and mirrors to hide the decline. I can make an intelligent-sounding and valid argument that proves anything if I make up data out of whole cloth for the underlying premises–and that is precisely what this man-made global warming junk is.

      • Traitor in Chief says:

No LEGITIMATE conservative imagines we “dismisses the science” because of political bias. We dismiss it because it is bullshit. 2013 was a year of increasing ice extent in the Arctic. The relative winter extent we see today has occurred countless times without the dreaded invasion of the “Polar Vortex”. FAIL. This pattern also occurred in the 70’s. FAIL. The “Globe” hasn’t warmed in 17 years. FAIL. Is this an effect from 1998? FAIL.

DISPARITY in pressure is what moves cold/warm boundaries.

      • Pete says:

“Scientific”, “reasoned”, “rational” … The words that are the exact opposite of the climate change wackos. You might want to read up on what Greenpeace founder Patrick Moore said about “global warming”. You all are in a cult.

      • Perhaps you can provide evidence that there were fewer massive floods in the UK in the past, that a warming Alaska and Russia (for a very short time) and that “record” drought that is not a record except for the news media. California has had 100 year droughts in the past. The fact that people think they can engineer a desert into farmland is not proof of global warming, just stupid people. Many have viewed this through a scientific lens and found there’s no science supporting the predictions. The “extreme weather” is well within historic ranges. Politics has nothing to do with the conclusions.

      • ..it’s entirely normal for moist warm pacific air to flow up over Alaska, that is in fact what makes the State viable. Nothing unusual at all except that now the Warminst are clutching at any straw, be more discerning.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mjo_north_america_rain.png

      • Ken says:

I dismiss the “science” you mention because there never has been actual scientific facts proving beyond any degree of doubt that “global warming” has actually happened. When known scientists have had open debates with only neutral news available to publish the data, then and only then will I make a judgement whether to run for the hills or just go buy an extra air conditioner. Once someone yells “fire” and it proves to be a false alarm the words “climate change” smells the same.

      • D. Self says:

And the escaping polar air in 1977, 78, 79 was caused by what?

      • billrow says:

The science and data has been faked, the books have been cooked and the NOAA personnel were instructed to falsify temperature readings at various weather stations. Still they want us to accept their data and their conclusions.

  3. Morgan says:

Lake Ontario has a lower elevation. The other 4 lakes are a whole Niagara Falls higher.

  4. Traitor In Chief says:

I think the record we need to beat is 94% or so…. can’t remember where I read it…

  5. KevinK says:

Just looked out my front window (100 feet from the south shore of Lake Ontario). 75 feet of ice against the shore, then clear water as far as I can see (about 15-20 miles). Not even any slush on the surface.

    100% possible, but unlikely, IMHO.

    Cheers,Kevin

    • Temperatures are going to plummet there in three days, and stay cold for a long time.

      • KevinK says:

Agreed, but there is usually significant wind associated with cold like that around here. So as soon as some slush starts forming on the surface the wind mixes it up with the warmer water and it does not have a chance to turn into real ice.

But either way will be interesting to watch. I just hope Al Bore doesn’t give a speech in Rochester or it will freeze and never melt again,OH NOES…..

        • mrunpc says:

Well, if Al E-Gore even opens his mouth all that hot air will melt all the snow and ice in N. America and then some!

        • denis says:

you guys should thanks Al, why? Easy, thanks to him you can use the internet reported comments. Don’t you know he invented intrnet?

  6. Morgan says:

I got $5 on Lake Ontario holding out, it’s still 38 degrees across 60% of the lake, at least it’s below 40 now.

    http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/glcfs.php?lake=o&ext=swt&type=N&hr=00

But if it freezes over 100% I’m going to write a letter to Al Gore, John Kerry and Obama asking for a scientific explanation.

    • Phantom II says:

Scientific explanation? Good luck with that. You’d have better luck writing to Lady Gaga and asking for an explanation of the theory of relativity.

    • Kyle K says:

CO2 freezes water at lower latitudes and melts it at higher latitudes.
This is basic settled science after all.

    • Cris says:

The scientific explanation is called global warming. The excessive warmth globally, causes a massive polar vortex to move above the Great Lakes, thus freezing’em over.

      • Meao says:

This bogus explanation was created in a hurry by UN IPCC, AlGore, Prince Charles et al. Everybody had forgotten the last time Polar Vortex visited NYC in 1974. Then, unlike now the explanation was Global Cooling.

        • JKuper says:

I’m not sure if you are simply uninformed or are lying. So I’ll assume that you are uninformed. During the 1970’s the scientific community indeed was trying to grapple with whether the earth was going to be cooling or warming. The vast majority of scientific papers supported the warming position while a few supported the cooling position. In the subsequent decades, the evidence was pretty clear that we were headed into a warming phase and it was likely due to massive dumping of carbon into the atmosphere. Thus, today, there is virtually no scientific talk of global cooling.

So, do you care to revise your statement due to being informed, however briefly, of the real history of global cooling claims in the 1970’s when scientific inquiry regarding the topic was in it’s infancy?

        • Your aggressive tone is both ugly and misinformed. You have no idea what you are talking about.

nope, it was closer to 50/50…..there’s been a lot of posts about it over the years

        • philjourdan says:

Actually, according to the discredited Cook analysis, the vast majority (98%+) of the papers take NO position. Which is as they should.

        • Dancing Bear says:

Meao and all the others commenting here have very short memories. Polar Vortex is what Monica Lewinsky did to Bill Clinton on her knees in the Oval Office. Al Gore, then our VP, found out about it and developed his theory of Global Warming. He then invented the Internet so he could spread the word around the world. For his valuable contribution to civilization, he is rich beyond his wildest dreams, lives in a huge CO2 spouting home, flies around in a huge CO2 spouting jet, and will live happily ever after.

        • Kuper: It could be argues that American scientists and maybe European ones proclaim warming, but the Russians appear to be on the side of cooling. Not sure what side they were on in the 1970s.

        • @JKuper garbage pure and simple, it was Global cooling.

        • David A says:

Kuper, read Mr. Goddard’s link. Even now, excluding all the hundreds of what if papers dealing with attrition but not cause, there are about as many papers skeptical of CO2 causing a disastrous warming. However the vast majority of the LSM all go with the non supported by observations drama of CAGW. Well in the 70s they did the same thing, only it was on cooling which had been ongoing for. abut thirty years. You are a victim of propaganda.

      • dan says:

Your picturesque gamble confuses global warming with heart warming.

    • Meao says:

      GLOBAL WARMING

      • There are two irrefutable facts to consider in all this friendly, climate banter.
        1. If Lake Ontario freezes over, however unlikely, it is entirely due to anthropogenic global warming.
        2. If Lake Ontario doesn’t freeze over, the sole cause is anthropogenic global warming.

    • Their response: The science is settled! Shut up and pay your carbon tax!

    • Faergus says:

Water reaches its maximum density at 39 degrees fahrenheit. At that point convection stops and the surface quickly freezes to form ice that insulates bodies of water. That is why lakes do not freeze solid and kill all the fish. If Ontario is at 38 degrees, it is on the verge of freezing. The deeper water of Ontario and the very high latent heat of fusion of water (144 BTUs/pound/80 calories/gram) are why it takes so long to freeze.

I grew up in Webster, NY. It was said that a resident of Webster drove a sleigh over the ice to Canada at some point in history. I don’t remember his name.

  7. Just more evidence that global warming is a reality

  8. starsword says:

Where is “Global Warming” now, Al Gore? The place of my birth is having the most epic cold ever witnessed.

  10. Gene Maynard says:

UHhhhh! This is NOT the first time, I was taught in grade school that at one time the northern polar ice cap extended as far south as present day Kentucky…..that would surely have covered the GLs….

  11. Eric Koch says:

Does this data support the chem trail conspiracy? One could say Kudos to the USA for the outstanding job they did spraying aluminum chloride (and whatever else they have added to the jet fuel) to reflect the sun’s rays and cool the surface. Better living through chemistry. The future of Aluminum Chloride shares looks bright.

  13. Rocky says:

My 4th grader told me the Scientific Method involves creating a theory, making a prediction based on the theory and then seeing if the facts in the future meet your prediction. If so, your theory is more likely to be correct. Has anyone seen any peer-reviewed global warming papers that predicted the Great Lakes freezing over? No? That’s because they have a dismal record of predicting anything. More often they wait until something happens and then explain why global warming caused it. My 4th grader says they would get an F in her science class by completely ignoring the scientific method. She says they are full of hot air.

  14. Please bring back global cooling. I’m freezing to death.

  15. Cam Gear says:

Tourists be sure to bring your shorty wetsuit next summer! Cold water and hot air make for bad windsurfing. Time to learn to kite board. The ice will keep the alligators and piranhas down South! Good to know when you’re dangling your toesies in the water.

  16. redrew says:

Gore’s private jet has been flying low patterns over Lake Ontario all week. No way he’ll late it freeze on his watch…..might hurt his speaking fees

  17. Dan Dawe says:

I read a Readers Digest story once of Lake Ontario freezing over. Sometime in the late 1800’s. But the Lake is so geographically close to being a river, it is exteremely unlikely

    • stewart pid says:

Lake Ontario is “geographically close to being a river”??? WTF are you talking about?

      • freebirds says:

Every river and stream from all of Michigan, parts of Canada, parts of Wisconsin, parts of Indiana, parts of Illinois, parts of Ohio. New York flow right thru narrow lake Ontario. Thus the lake has current. All of Niagara falls flow thru the lake and out the other side. Moving water freezes at a slower rate. That’s why we here in Michigan leave our faucets trickle during cold times to keep pipes from freezing and likely bursting

  18. Sundance says:

For the winter of 2013/14, NOAA’s Great
    Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory
projects maximum ice coverage of the Great
Lakes to be 57% to 62% by February, which
is a little above the long-term average max
    ice cover of 55%.

I suggest all of you do some serious DD regarding REAL climate change, not the garbage the commies/progressives/liberals/socialists (aka: “democrats) sling. The following article is based on REAL scientific study (unlike the nonsense that Gore and his enviro-whack jobs spew forth) and was published in, of all places, Pravda, the former Soviet Union propaganda publication…isn’t THAT ironic?

Anyway, here’s the link and I suggest anyone living north of Virginia, heed some of what it says because you may not even be able to LIVE where you are if it comes to fruition: http://english.pravda.ru/science/earth/11-01-2009/106922-earth_ice_age-0/

  20. Leftshot says:

Just so you know percentage of ice coverage on the Great Lakes has only been tracked since the early 70s when satellites for doing this first became available. So when they talk about a ‘record’ they are talking about over this 40 year period. 1977, 1978 and 1994 had similarly large ice coverage.

  25. Bryan says:

  26. Bryan says:

And also I’m glad evaporation will be hampered so we can catch up on the water levels this spring. It’s looking up!

I’ve only ever seen Lake Ontario freeze a mile out once and doubt I’ll ever see it freeze over in my lifetime or the next. It’s normal for the east end of the lake to freeze because of the Bay of Quinte, but saying the whole lake will freeze over is a huge stretch of imagination and truth. It’s been a cold winter, but this headline is a bit too sensational, so at best you could put the figure at 80% not 100% of the great lakes.

    • You can see the future. Amazing.

Well, I’ve seen the past, the lake never froze in the 60’s which were cooler than now. If it didn’t freeze back then, then it’s doubtful it will this winter. I’m assuming you don’t live near lake Ontario from your reply. I’ve lived next to it since the 50’s. It only froze a mile out near Toronto in 93/94 and that was a very cold winter. I’m not saying it can’t happen but it will take very extreme conditions to make that happen.

        • Your assumption that the 1960’s was colder than this winter is incorrect.

        • ldd says:

Er, Toronto is not on Lake Ontario …

        • Morgan says:

93/94 was the most ridiculously cold winter around here (Saratoga, NY). We got -27 at nights for 2 weeks, then it came back in Feb -27 again. A lot of places set their ALL TIME record cold in Jan of ’94. Glens Falls was -35 one night. That record still stands.

Did Lake Ontario freeze that year? Hell no.

        • harris9513 says:

We – that is I and my parents who are here with me and are in their 80s with wonderful memory capacity – remember it freezing in the 70s. Back then in the papers and on television, they talked about the last time it froze being the winter of 1933-34. Indeed I’ve just pulled up some newspaper articles that confirm that people did believe it froze that winter, to the best of their knowledge at the time.

Cold is not the only thing that effects freezing over – Wind and currents also determine if a lake will freeze over, along with their proximity to the ocean which helps regulate their temps.

        • harris9513 says:

Just a kind of unrelated aside: I was watching a documentary the other day that said “According to local lore, two people died in a fire here in 1976.” I almost choked laughing! Apparently we didn’t keep records back then. /sarc

        • TL2 says:

I remember as a little girl, during the mid 1970’s it was very cold, and snow I’ve never seen since. I lived in New Brunswick then. My mother would not let me out to play because she would have not found me in the deep snow! This was not a snow drift. The drifts were much higher. When I was older, while visiting my aunt and uncle, I saw my uncle’s pictures of snow, packed at least 10-12 feet, solid, with trees in between, like sticks in playdo. The picture was taken in or near Limestone, Maine, during the mid 1970’s. I was wondering if such winters as those would happen again in my lifetime. I don’t think the winters were like that in the 1960’s, at least not according to the older generation in my family.

The dude’s calling you crazy. I know what you wrote is true, at least the spraying, not sure about the reason for it. There was some seriously heavy chem trailing, non-stop rows and rows, criss-crossing the sky, in the days leading up to the flood in southern Alberta this past summer. The trails we witnessed over the two and a bit years, since we first noticed them, happened nearly every day, and the money put into it must have been incredible, because the planes sprayed in front of the sun, following it across the sky, for kilometres. But those days before the flood, that was just wild. A person would have had to been blind or in denial not to have noticed them. We moved out of the area just says before the diluge. It was chilling, being told what was unfolding after we left the area. Are the two related, who knows. But the spraying for sure IS happening.

A bunch of people interested in things like when lakes freeze.. I love it! I’m in heaven. I have no particular knowledge with regard to this area of science, but I think I’ve heard a couple things which might be useful in figuring this out. First, obviously, Lake Ontario is deep relative to its size. I’m betting this allows for greater quantities of warmer (non-frozen) water from the bottom to continually disrupt the ice above – thereby causing the lake to take longer to freezing over. Additionally, I think I once read that the lakes to the west of Ontario cause a warming effect on the air temp to the east, thereby giving Lake Ontario warmer air temperatures less capable of freezing the surface waters. Also, my personal observation of weather patterns has given me the impression that the coldest average temperatures seem to occur to the west of Lake Ontario (particularly centered around Lake Superior). All these things together would seem to play a role. I’m just guessing though (in an educated way I hope).

With regard to the overall weather pattern question, once again, I have nothing to back me up but personal experience (and a couple observations of historical data). When I was young, I played hockey in Duluth, MN (in the ’70’s). I remember we’d come into the warming shack after practice, take off our skates and wait for our dad’s to rub our feet back to life. The screaming started at one end of the shack and took over everything within minutes. I left Minnesota long ago but I have friends and family who’ve told me the last 20 years have been strangely lacking in cold or snow (usually). I’m told there’s been no screaming in the warming shack. What I’m saying is I don’t think this year is definitively an aberration. The aberration may be that this year has taken so long to get here.

    • Has it occurred to you that the 1970’s might have been the aberration?

      • Swan says:

Perhaps they were. I haven’t studied the historical data for a long enough period of time to know. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that data exists. Truthfully, therein lies the primary problem I think. I really appreciate your reading my post though! I feel published.

    • It is freezing very rapidly

      • chinook says:

From my hilltop house near the Eastern end it’s looking quite frozen for miles. With Ontario’s strong currents and winds it’s slow to freeze. When fishing out of a boat, care has to be taken to consider the current or else tangled downrigger cables and lines can occur. Enough windless days could freeze it though. When windy the wave action from the West really builds into giant rollers and breaks up and moves ice around, but ice cover quickly returns when it’s calm, which it has been the last few days.

        • redjefff says:

Conservative party observers denounce this as an effort to swell the ranks of “undocumented New Democrats” and vow to use secret Canadian technology to restore the lakes to a liquid state. 71. Jeff Murray says:

Idiots, it’s caused by global warming. Al Gore told me that, he’s an expert.

  72. The Bobster says:

Since 1998, more than 31,000 American scientists from diverse climate-related disciplines, including more than 9,000 with Ph.D.s, have signed a public petition announcing their belief that “…there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate.” Included are atmospheric physicists, botanists, geologists, oceanographers, and meteorologists.

So where did that famous “consensus” claim that “98% of all scientists believe in global warming” come from? It originated from an endlessly reported 2009 American Geophysical Union (AGU) survey consisting of an intentionally brief two-minute, two question online survey sent to 10,257 earth scientists by two researchers at the University of Illinois. Of the about 3.000 who responded, 82% answered “yes” to the second question, which like the first, most people I know would also have agreed with.

Then of those, only a small subset, just 77 who had been successful in getting more than half of their papers recently accepted by peer-reviewed climate science journals, were considered in their survey statistic. That “98% all scientists” referred to a laughably puny number of 75 of those 77 who answered “yes”.

  73. The Bobster says:

While real polling of climate scientists and organization memberships is rare, there are a few examples. A 2008 international survey of climate scientists conducted by German scientists Dennis Bray and Hans von Storch revealed deep disagreement regarding two-thirds of the 54 questions asked about their professional views. Responses to about half of those areas were skewed on the “skeptic” side, with no consensus to support any alarm. The majority did not believe that atmospheric models can deal with important influences of clouds, precipitation, atmospheric convection, ocean convection, or turbulence. Most also did not believe that climate models can predict precipitation, sea level rise, extreme weather events, or temperature values for the next 50 years.

A 2010 survey of media broadcast meteorologists conducted by the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication found that 63% of 571 who responded believe global warming is mostly caused by natural, not human, causes. Those polled included members of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the National Weather Association.

A more recent 2012 survey published by the AMS found that only one in four respondents agreed with UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change claims that humans are primarily responsible for recent warming. And while 89% believe that global warming is occurring, only 30% said they were very worried.

A March 2008 canvas of 51,000 Canadian scientists with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysics of Alberta (APEGGA) found that although 99% of 1,077 replies believe climate is changing, 68% disagreed with the statement that “…the debate on the scientific causes of recent climate change is settled.” Only 26% of them attributed global warming to “human activity like burning fossil fuels.” Regarding these results, APEGGA’s executive director, Neil Windsor, commented, “We’re not surprised at all. There is no clear consensus of scientists that we know of.”

This anti-evolutionary agenda is the reason why they push for social leveling, try to curtail and eliminate healthy competition, and preach the nonsenses of the AGW theory that is de facto a tricky way to redistribute wealth of nations from the prosperous to those that are on the bring of collapse.

Just look what happened to America. We used to be the world leader in progress in science, technology, manufacturing, and living standards. That progress slowed down in the 1960ies when the “Liberals” got their grasp of political power, and is approaching a full stop as their power becomes more and more prevalent.

  84. KevinK says:

From the shore near Rochester NY we currently have about 100 feet of solid ice that you could walk on. Then about 100 feet of free floating ice/slush (visibly moving eastward with the current). Then mostly open water with about 25% very light slush coverage. Visibility limited to a few miles out. Little wind at this time. Even if the cold temps persist a slight wind will stir up the slush and loose ice with the warm water and it will probably revert back to mostly open water. I have seen this progression/regression many times in the winter. The lake is about 35 miles wide at this location.

This might look like “ice coverage” from a satellite, but it is more like slush coverage. Still interesting to watch.

The newspaper account from 1934 was pre-satellite. I doubt anybody walked out from shore to see how far the ice went.

If this is ‘global warming’ I would hate to see what winter would really be like. We’ve ad over 60 inches of snow this year, (which happens to be 37 inches over normal. ) Hey Alison Gorsky tell my snowblower its going to get warmer and melt the ice cap from all of this “man made heat. LOL

  89. Jake Sinclair says:

In the 70’s, were they going to run out of oil before they froze to death or after?

  90. Tumbleweed says:

Ya just gotta love that Democrat Man made Global Warming scam they are working so hard to get everyone to believe!

  91. ERIC WINKELMAN says:

I am not sure if anyone else has provided the information that very recently Niagara falls is now frozen thus drastically eliminating any water turbulence caused by the falls. So if it stays below freezing for the next couple of weeks, then Lake Ontario could freeze over. If not, then the amount of ice cove could dramatically increase

    • Morgan says:

      1. Turbulence doesn’t add heat
      2. Niagara Falls is 15 miles from Lake Ontario
      3. The amount of water added by the Niagara River in 2 weeks is 0.00000000% of the water in Lake Ontario
      4. WTF?

  92. jaggovv says:

Great Lakes Approaching 100% Ice Cover – For The First Time On Record
it could only be (all together now) Global warming ..lolol you libs and green weenies have no credibility…give it up..

  93. everett says:

I get depressed and intimidated by Al Gore. Can’t help it. Striving away every day just to exist and he gets to invent the Iinternet AND Global warming all in one lifetime. Ain’t far. Ain’t far I tell ya’!

  94. bill smith says:

Hey AL Gore please buy my carbon credits, I need the money because I am freezing and the snow is so high I need to pay a kid to shovel. Please Al buy my credits, I am begging you, please, oh Al have a heart you got me in to this mess with your predictions of us burning up by 2012. Remember the summer of 2006 when you said this was the hottest year in 700 years? I didn’t realize that they did not have gas guzzlers then. You tricked me. Please buy my credits!!!

  95. TomC says:

Seems like everyone is trying to figure out why Lake Ontario has yet to freeze over.

The answer lies is a few simple reasons:

    1. Lake Ontario has a very deep basin. Aside from a small section in the northeast corner of the lake nearly all of the lake is over 400′ deep.
    2. Maritime moderation. Lake Ontario lies downwind of other lakes in most cold air advection regimes. The most typical flow of cold air advection comes from the northwest; upwind lies Superior and Huron. These lakes moderate the boundary layer air before arriving to Ontario. Of course, this isn’t much of a problem now, but normally, this adds several degrees to the skin temperature of the air/increases it’s humidity.
    3. Cloud moderation. Again, clouds bounce back escaping IR radiation. During cold air advection regimes where clouds are produced in lake effect snow events, the portin of the clouds over the water reradiates escaping IR coming from the lake surface. Add in clouds from upwind lakes and this creates further warming in the boundary layer of the air over Ontario in particular.
    4. Prevailing wind direction. Since wind tends to align down the length of Ontario in most cold air advection regimes from a westerly component, this creates a swell on the lake which promotes mixing of water and hinders ice development.

Ice development on Lake Ontario best occurs when there’s periods of north wind and/or calm high pressure. The next two days WILL see north winds (tomorrow) and high pressure (tuesday). The GLERL analysis on March 4th will have the highest concentration over all basins for the year, and for Ontario as well. Perhaps Ontario will top out at 60%. But it won’t freeze over.

The weather patterns after March 4th is looking unsuitable for continued ice growth and I suspect most of the ice on Ontario to diminish back down to 20% by the 7th.

    • Morgan says:

      1. Lake Superior and Huron don’t moderate anything because they are frozen
      2. No maritime moderation because it’s currently -4 here in upstate NY
      3. The cloud thing is true. Always cloudy there
      4. Wind aligning down the lake causes it to cool off faster due to the wind chill effect
      5. mixing not necessary to hinder ice development, 38 degree water doesn’t freeze
      6. Ontario won’t freeze over this year. 48 degrees on Friday

      • TomC says:

        1. I repeat, “These lakes moderate the boundary layer air before arriving to Ontario. Of course, this isn’t much of a problem now, but normally, this adds several degrees to the skin temperature of the air/increases it’s humidity.”

If you actually bothered to read this fully I inserted the clause “this isn’t much of a problem now” inferring that those lakes are currently frozen. But throughout the winter season (not any one in particular, generically-speaking) these lakes moderate the Cp airmasses before reaching Ontario in most CAA regimes.

        4. Wind causes the surface to cool. But the surface is a miniscule volume compared to the heat reserve in the rest of the body of water. Swell causes warmer sub-surface waters to mix to the surface. Swells build when the wind blows down the length of the lake. The length of the lake is aligned to the prevailing wind direction. This is all real simple stuff here.

        5. Mixing most assuredly does hinder ice development. And what do you think the temperature was in the middle of Lake Michigan when it just froze over?? Ice forms along the near-shore waters, blows out into the middle of the lake where it usually melts over the warmer waters. So it doesn’t matter if the water temperature is 38. The only thing that will do is melt the ice which drifts into that region. When the ice is thick enough, or when the air temperature is cold enough to retain the ice which drifts into areas with warmer water temperatures, the upper layers of water under the ice stratify.

        6. Ontario will reach about 60% this season. It won’t freeze completely because there’s too much insolation this time of year for the lake to freeze over given it’s current state. And it might reach 35 on Friday but certainly not 48. You get that forecast from Hansen, or something?

  96. eric says:

Wow, even with everything that Is presented to you Steve Goddard, if that’s your real name, climate change isn’t happening in your lifetime? Maybe you should argue gun control or minimum wage or health care, oh wait every other conservative outlet is already doing that, hmmmm…have any new ideas???

    • jay352 says:

Bwaahh!!! Great argument you have there Eric. Yep, you just convinced everyone with your outstanding knowledge. Idiot.

    • leon0112 says:

Eric – I believe the climate has been changing for billions of years. And will continue to change for the next billion years. Long after our species is extinct.

But I don’t see any evidence that burning fossil fuels will affect global temperatures in my lifetime. The natural temperature variation each day exceeds the changes in the averages over the last century.

Humans are now living in a wide variety of climates around the globe. Humans have proven to be quite adaptable. The species is thriving right now due to cheap fossil fuel energy. While the climate will continue to change, I have faith the species will adapt. After all, we invented air conditioners so that people can live in Houston.

    • Andy DC says:

Why don’t you stick around and see what Steve has to offer on his blog. Or better yet, r\ead some of his old posts. You might actually learn a thing or two.

    • philjourdan says:

Not too bright are you eric? Steve has never said climate change will not happen in his lifetime. He is not the fool you are.

He has stated that AGW is not a C at THIS time. And certainly not due to any of the failed models used to generate hysteria among the weak minded – like yourself.

  97. Hucklebarry says:

RUN!!! Polar bears reported prowling around Al Gore’s house.

  98. Rick La Bonte says:

Wow, thank heaven for for Global Warming, otherwise things would be a lot worse. Everyone should send Al Gore a lot of money for keeping an Ice Age away.

  99. john says:

Maybe Lake Ontario doesn’t freeze because of the waste dumped into it on its western edge. Oh no 4 million people wouldn’t or couldn’t be a reason for Lake Ontario not freezing as quickly as say 30 or 40 years ago. I know it’s the methane gas from all the cows, hold on maybe it’s e-coli, ops I’ve got to go a text just came and I lost my train of thought.

  100. max power says:

Al Gore is a genius……….the Earth is clearly warming, up is down, red is yellow and obama care is a good deal!

  101. Global warming sure is elusive, I wish that I could find some so that I can move there!

  102. Bob says:

We have terrestrial and satellite information for the last few years on C02 infrared radiation. C02 adsorbs infrared and reemits it 360 degrees in its own particular infrared spectrum. The amount of infrared emission, in the C02 spectrum, being sent into space is decreasing and the amount going to Earth is increasing. However, this is a small contribution to overall infrared spectrum. Man’s contribution to any C02 effect is even a smaller part.

The far North is warming (in general) and the far south (in general) is cooling. Weather patterns have changed ‘again’. In addition to cold, the amount of precipitation is important to the thickness of ice at the poles. A glacier will not grow if the wintertime precipitation is low. The remaining glaciers in North America are mainly in more temperate climates with a high amount of precipitation in winter.

The ice on the arctic ocean is already floating and displacing water. A melt will not raise the ocean levels. Greenland and Antarctica are the ocean raisers. The largest mass of ice on the planet, on Western Antarctica, continues to increase. The total ice on the planet is increasing.

I like “green” but we should not handcuff our economy in our war against global warming. Even if man-made global warming is significant, USA policies absolutely will not stop it.

  103. Harry says:

mayhaps It’s been cleaned up of trash fairly well now in order to freeze

  104. debbie says:

i was always told lake superior is too deep to ever freeze over it is 1,332 ft; deep i found also
