Michael Mann Lying To The Press Again

And while we can’t say that Hurricane Sandy was literally caused by climate change, we know with some degree of confidence, that the impacts where made worse by climate change. For example, that 13-foot surge that flooded a large part of Manhattan, at least one of those 13 feet was due to human caused global warming.

The tide gauge measurement of sea level at Lower Manhattan has been increasing linearly for over 150 years, with the peak slope around 1940. There isn’t one shred of evidence that CO2 emissions have affected sea level in New York, much less raised sea level by one foot. His claim has zero scientific basis.

  1. Morgan says:

The tide surge was 13 feet. The high tide was 5 feet. Sea level rise in the past 100 years was 9 inches. Total 18 feet 9 inches. The amount of that 18 feet 9 inches that was caused by AGW was zilch, nada, nichts

Mikey has never been constrained by facts in the past, so what’s new?

Mikey and Phil and Tom and Caspar and Keith and Susan and Kevin, recreating the scene from “Treasure of the Sierra Madre”:

“FACTS?! We don’t need no steenkin’ facts!!”

  3. Tel says:

And the lawsuit comes along in the next few days.

    • Gail Combs says:

Look at it this way, if we tie Mikey up in a gizillion lawsuits we will keep him too busy trying to keep the courts from enforcing discovery to continue his propaganda.

So far he has skated but now the shoe is on the other foot and Mark Steyn is suing Mikey. That means he can not wiggle out of discovery so easily and with three different courts all looking for discovery he is going to have a bit of trouble with the Dog Ate My Homework excuse.

  4. Don says:

Don’t forget New York’s bigger problem is subsidence. Like many areas of the world, it is literally sinking. Steve’s post from 5/5/2012 covers that subject well. Has anybody ever figured out the weight of all the buildings on Manhattan (much of which is fill dirt)?

  5. Jl says:

I see- hurricane Sandy wasn’t caused by climate change, but 1of the 13 feet were. But didn’t Sandy cause the 13 foot surge? Nice trick, there Mikey.

  6. Jl says:

    “1 of the 13”

  7. Don says:

Sandy was a wind event that came ashore at a full moon high tide (highest in over a year in fact). I guess the full moon is a part of AGW. Mann really is a dolt.

“For example, that 13-foot surge that flooded a large part of Manhattan, at least one of those 13 feet was due to human caused global warming.”

“Twas brillig and the slithy toves did gyre and gimbal in the wabe. All mimsy were the barogoves, and the mome raths outgrabe.”

Yep, coherence seems about the same.

  9. Bob Knows says:

The worst hurricane in NY was in the 1930s. Hurricanes tracking up the east coast instead of into the Gulf is because weather conditions are on the down side of a natural warming and cooling cycle. Water temperatures were down to what they were in the 1930s.

  10. Clankster says:

I wrote a critical comment on their website. It wasn’t accepted. In fact not a single comment has been posted. Apparently not much Mann-love going on there.

  11. mikegeo says:

So a quick 1 in 13 guess gets a piece published. Seems about the same contrived math guesswork that went into the hockey stick paper. Wonder what “proxies” he used this time?

  12. Gamecock says:

It was the bottom foot of the 13, so it didn’t do any of the damage.
