In Star Trek, they determined that altering the past could seriously mess up the present universe. Climate scientists are not bound by such constraints.

In one episode it was determined that the warp drive was causing temperal spots in a certain corridor in space. It was very much a CO2 global warming slant.
Just remembered that in First Contact the Borg went and changed the past so they could control the future, another level of comparability with the Communist threat.
