Thirty Years Since “Global Warming Began”

On June 23, 1988 NASA’s James Hansen told Congress that global warming had begun.

Global Warming Has Begun, Expert Tells Senate – The New York Times

One June 22, the night before his testimony, Hansen and Senator Tim Wirth sabotaged the air conditioner in the meeting room.

we called the Weather Bureau and found out what historically was the hottest day of the summer. Well, it was June 6 or June 9 or whatever it was, so we scheduled the hearing that day, and bingo: It was the hottest day on record in Washington, or close to it. It was stiflingly hot that summer. [At] the same time you had this drought all across the country, so the linkage between the Hansen hearing and the drought became very intense.

… What we did it was went in the night before and opened all the windows, I will admit, right? So that the air conditioning wasn’t working inside the room and so when the, when the hearing occurred there was not only bliss, which is television cameras in double figures, but it was really hot. …  So Hansen’s giving this testimony, you’ve got these television cameras back there heating up the room, and the air conditioning in the room didn’t appear to work. So it was sort of a perfect collection of events that happened that day, with the wonderful Jim Hansen, who was wiping his brow at the witness table and giving this remarkable testimony.

Interviews – Timothy Wirth | Hot Politics | FRONTLINE | PBS

That day was by far the hottest June 22 on record in the US, with almost the entire country over 90 degrees and much of the country over 100 degrees.

That summer was the last really hot summer in the US, but in matters of climate, facts are irrelevant. The political left found an excuse to blame humans and seize power, and that was the end of any pretense in reality with climate science.

David Young on Twitter can’t reproduce your sea ice volume graphs and says 2017 is lowest on record

Tony, you should consider doing some posts on Michael Mann’s Work. He makes Hansen look like a competent honest expert.

So here’s Senator Tim Wirth giving us the true picture of the U.S. Senate: a bunch of stupid, gullible, opportunistic jerks – just there to line their own pockets

Diapers and politicians need to changed regularly and for the same reason. _BF

Tim Wirth(less) also famously said – at the time, by the way – that even if the theory of Global Warming is wrong, “we should push it anyway, because we would be doing the right things”. I probably should not use quotes above because I’m relying on recollection, but that is essentially what Wirth said

By “doing the right things”, he meant turning back industrialization, reducing population, reducing use of fossil fuels, and limiting national growth.

Looks like sea ice extent is in a slower decline. What a terrible days for climate alarmists.

    • Brad says:

Another one but without the ‘at least 15% sea ice’. I find this one more reliable cause that is the actual extent because the with 15% means even far south ice counts what causes a rapid decline for summer.

      • Andy says:

I wouldn’t rely on that because it does not mention 15% because it does actually use 15%, they just do not put it on the graph.

        See here

“Annual Arctic sea ice extent (total area of at least 15% ice concentration) for selected years since 1979”

        Your sentence

cause that is the actual extent because the with 15% means even far south ice counts what causes a rapid decline for summer.

        is utter gibberish.

    • Andy says:

You cannot take a snapshot to prove anything because we already had this argument at the end of April on here when it flattened.

Looking at the ice you need to take trends over a longer time scale. What you are looking at is just weather.

      • Gator says:

Actually, it is called an “interglacial”, and the ice is supposed to be melting. That is the long term view Andy.

        • R. Shearer says:

Yes, thankfully, I can’t imagine being here if my birthplace were a mile under ice like it was only about 20,000 years ago.

      • Steven Fraser says:

And yet it is so interesting that the weather makes so much difference year-to-year for min and max, but for a given day at this time of year the values are grouped fairly close together.

One might consider the short-term ice extent trends that led to the ice highstand in 1979. What gets very little press is that the extent in 1974 was almost 1 million sq km lower than the 1976-1989 average, and 4 years later was almost 1 million sq km above average. (IPCC 1990 FAR WG1, fig 7.20, p. 224).

  6. Andy says:

As far as I can see there is no evidence from AGW that leads to using that scientific data in the future to improve predictions. There may be a link but currently not proven.

We are the first people to experience the creation
and growth of a world religion within just 30 years.

A religion which,by some strange coincidence is pushed by globalists and fits perfectly into their global agenda((and the only option to finance a global agenda)).
A religion which unites the people by emotionalising with lies&fear (nothing new on the western front)
disguised as science((sounds so Karl Marx))
    and the biggest threat is:
People who can be convinced to worry about such an abstract thing as climate
can be convinced into believin any stupidity(eg. consider a massmurdering
ideology that always ends in tyranny as the way to go for mankind)

    • Johansen says:

It allows you to wag your self righteous finger at others. Senator Tim Wirth, above, is saying “Look how SMART I am, I can bamboozle the entire U.S. Senate with Parlor Tricks, they’re so stupid; the American people are soooooo LUCKY to have me here, SAAAVING the planet. We were SOOOO tricky…. we called the National WEATHER Bureau….. bla bla bla barf barf

Sorry, I’d rather ask this privately: see the timing problem in your plot, at the June 22 1988 peak, aligning on late 1987 on the x-axis, at the vertical red line)?
