Playing With Fire

So much of left-wing thought is a kind of playing with fire, by people who don’t even know that fire is hot .

– George Orwell

Just back from walking the dogs in -11F (-25C) weather.  Boulder government wants to be fossil fuels free, but without fossil fuels – many people here would be dead in few hours.

Washington State didn’t get to -11, but the entire State is colder than usual.
Boulder area is a little colder than we are. KELN Ellensburg made Zero.
As we look off toward Colorado from central Washington State the sky is beginning to lighten and show a little orange color. It’s 7 AM.

    Important points:
In the agricultural center of the State where WA’s wine grape vineyards are located the overnight temperature is low enough to kill buds on the vines. If sky clears, this coming Sunday will be in single digits also.

On the great left side of the State, cold air has been streaming out of British Columbia via the Fraser River Valley. Last week the cold air lifted the marine layer and snow blanketed the entire region – out to the Pacific Ocean. The same set-up is expected again tomorrow (Fri.). Folks west of the Cascades do not expect such weather, and don’t cope well.

We have a 100% electric house – hydro power.

  2. Johansen says:

“Playing with fire” is a good title.
If people don’t have electricity to heat their home because the giant propellers aren’t turning, they will turn to coal, wood, oil, and trash burning. The air will be filthy again, and we’ll be right back to 1850.

    • Colorado Wellington says:

True, but filthy air would be just a little inconvenience compared to the horrific things people start doing to each other when societal order breaks down. Most of the ignorant Progressive morons around here don’t have a clue what horrors and suffering they would cause should they succeed.

  3. phodges says:

Meanwhile here in California we got 6 ft of snow in one day (in town, not on the Ski Area), then -10F, and -14F last night.

  4. Gamecock says:

‘Boulder government wants to be fossil fuels free’

Pure decadence. They fight that which keeps them alive.

  5. Gary Seymour says:

“So much of left-wing thought is a kind of playing with fire, by people who don’t even know that fire is hot .

    – George Orwell”

Really? Do you have even the slightest clue what Eric Blair [Orwell] really meant by that quote?

He was castigating socialists for falling for Stalinism. He fought in the Spanish civil war and was shot throught the neck by a sniper. Then the Russian-backed forces (Stalinists) turned on his war bretheren, imprisoning them without any justification. I would be a little pissed, myself, wouldn’t you?

It is a little more than amusing that right-wingers try to make this quote about Orwell’s distain for the left. He was the left. He was a life-long socialist. Pissed that Stalin was corrupting the Lenin/Trotsky message, he railed against Stalinist, especially those that imprisoned his brothers-in-arms during the Spanish Civil War. Okey, dokey, comrade?

    • Colorado Wellington says:

The Party is fortunate to have you, brave comrade Seymour. The bright progressive future will not come without heroes willing to jump straight into the fire.

      Nice try Gary!

Excerpt from the book THE ROAD TO WIGAN PIER which Orwell wrote in 1937, and which the so-called “Socialists” and Communists tried to have suppressed from publication:

      Part Two: Chapter 11

“…The ugly fact is that most middle-class Socialists, while theoretically pining for a class-less society, cling like glue to their miserable fragments of social prestige….The Coles, Webbs, Stracheys, etc., are not exactly proletarian writers…Sometimes I look at a Socialist — the intellectual, tract-writing type of Socialist, with his pullover, his fuzzy hair, and his Marxian quotation — and wonder what the devil his motive really is. It is often difficult to believe that it is a love of anybody, especially of the working class, from whom he is of all people the furthest removed. The underlying motive of many Socialists, I believe, is simply a hypertrophied sense of order. The present state of affairs offends them not because it causes misery, still less because it makes freedom impossible, but because it is untidy; what they desire, basically, is to reduce the world to something resembling a chessboard. Take the plays of a lifelong Socialist like Shaw. How much understanding or even awareness of working-class life do they display? … You get the same thing in a more mealy-mouthed form in Mrs Sidney Webb’s autobiography, which gives, unconsciously, a most revealing picture of the high-minded Socialist slum-visitor. The truth is that, to many people calling themselves Socialists, revolution does not mean a movement of the masses with which they hope to associate themselves; it means a set of reforms which ‘we’, the clever ones, are going to impose upon ‘them’, the Lower Orders…”

Eric was warning us about people exactly like you Gary, liars and revisionists who think they are much smarter than they really are.
