Trenberth looked at a data set which was based on a model, of where all the missing heat went. And it all disappeared into the deep ocean. Or maybe the model/reanalysis is wishful thinking on Trenberth’s part. 😉
(I prefer science where they predict what will happen and then it happens, as opposed to the theory going wrong and then inventing a new theory post hoc to explain why their original theory isn’t actually wrong. But I’m a bit old fashioned that way.)
