“Arctic bergs do not attain to the same vast proportions as the Antarctic bergs “calved” from the Ross Barrier and the stupendous glaciers of the Antarctic continent, but they are frequently of tremendous proportions when they start on their southern voyage. Ross, for example, examined one which he found stranded in 61 fathoms (366 ft.) of water. It measured 4,169 ft. in length, 3,689 ft. in breadth, and rose to 51 ft. above sea level. Its weight was estimated to be about 1,292,000,000 tons. Hayes, in the far north, came upon another, also aground, which was 315 ft. in height and over three-quarters of a mile in length. In the Antarctic, however, the bergs are often miles in circumference, and from 600 ft. to 800 ft. high.”
