Time Magazine Says That Antarctica Is Getting Hot

The insanity of the left continues to grow by leaps and bounds.

Antarctica: It’s Getting Hot at the Bottom of the Planet

By Bryan Walsh  Dec. 24, 2012

One of the big environmental stories of 2012 was the record melting of sea ice in the Arctic, which reached its smallest extent this summer since satellite data began being kept in the late 1970s. But it’s not the Arctic alone that’s reacting to manmade climate change by transforming into a large puddle. On the other end of the Earth, the continent of Antarctica contains enough ice to swamp just about every coastal city on the planet were it all to melt. The Arctic is transforming before our eyes, but it’s changes in Antarctica that could make Waterworld into a documentary.

Antarctica is not warming

Sea ice extent around Antarctica hit a record high this year, and has been above normal every day in 2012. Antarctica is not warming or melting, and only a spectacular lying scumbag would attempt to make the case that it was. The US press corpse is now worse than Soviet Pravda ever was. They never tell the truth about anything.

  1. Andy DC says:

Since no one lives there, people get very little anecdotal evidence of what actually goes on. It is thus very easy for the “holier than though” psuedo intellectuals in the media to get away with spewing blatant lies to their adoring true believers.

    • Bob Campbell says:

Try G’ …of the Antarctic region varies from approximately 4,400 in summer to 1,100 in winter; in addition, approximately 1,000 personnel, including ship’s crew and scientists doing onboard research, are present in the waters of the treaty region…

“Ice around the South Pole has expanded to cover a record area, scientists revealed yesterday – a month after saying that the North Pole had lost an unprecedented amount of its ice.
Researchers say – rather confusingly – that both occurrences are down to the ‘complex and surprising’ effects of global warming.”

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2162074/Global-warming-melting-sea-ice-risk-wiping-Antarctics-Emperor-penguins.html

“The Emperor penguin’s future is looking bleak if global temperatures continue to rise and melt sea ice, scientists have warned.”

    Ri-Damn-diculous.

For the lib AGW is an article of faith. To them it’s a testament to the wickedness of capitalism nay individual economic freedom itself. Of course, anything that appears to support the reality of AGW will be believed and disseminated without question even if it’s contradictory to something they previously believed and disseminated.

    • kirkmyers says:

You hit the nail on the head. The AGW alarmists make no attempt to hide their contempt for capitalism and market economy. They are collectivists through and through. Worse, they exhibit an anti-technology, anti-progress Luddite ideology that rejects the technological advances that brought us out of the dark ages and into the modern industrial age. They won’t be happy until we’ve been reduced to impoverished hunter-gatherers eking out a subsistence livelihood while the world’s population starves and freezes in the dark.

    @Justa

Funny stuff coming from the “it’s not happening and if it is we didn’t cause it and if we did it won’t be much and if it is it will be good and if it won’t then it’s too expensive to do anything about it and if it’s a problem we’ll just adapt because, hey, climate has always changed and we’re still here so business as usual is the answer” crowd.

    • johnmcguire says:

You must be blind and deaf . I already know you are dumb . Since you are dumb I will explain , by dumb I mean stupid dumb not without the ability to speak dumb .

    • You still haven’t demonstrated that it is warming. Wait till you manage that trick before you move on the speculating about the magnitude, effects, & causes.

    • Justa Joe says:

      @pa32r
Whatever you do don’t rationalize or even address Times’s peddling alarmism about Antarica’s melting or is it lack thereof. Anyway extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and you’re the guy with the extraordinary claim not me. I’m not asking you to join in my neurotic paranoia about rising sea level creating an epic deluge. You are. I’m also not making you pay for stupid pointless non-solutions to a less than abundantly evident problem either. You are. I’m not attempting to impose energy restictions on individuals or entire economies. You are.

What would really be funny is hearing some of your non-“business as usual” (business as usaual is be definition bad… don’t you know?) “solutions” to your imagined climate problem. I’d guess there would be enough material there to keep us laughing for weeks.

Maybe Time called James Hansen for an Antarctic update.

  6. suyts says:

They’re trying to reconstruct the Byrd station data….. again. It’s impossible to do properly. They’re attempting to make that one impossible reconstruction representative of a large part of a continent. Then they try to pretend that in a place where temps never exceed -10 deg C, is the cause for melt. The authors also seem confused about glacial calving and melting. Here’s my perspective. ….. http://suyts.wordpress.com/2012/12/24/early-christmas-gift-from-the-warmista-blast-from-the-past-wais-again/ …. yes, shameless plug, but I thought some readers may be interested.

  7. ralphcramdo says:

    Isn’t it summer in Antarctica?

  8. Basil Beamish says:

I saw this article on Antarctica warming worse than we expected using adjusted data and thought here we go again. So did a little analysis of my own on the hot days for Mawson using the raw data from the Australian BOM site that had a good continuous record from 1954 to present. I used a hot day definition of Tmax >=5C. There is a persistent decrease in the number of hot days over this period and in fact since 1994 the average number of hot days per year has been 2.6, compared to the long term average for the entire period of 5.9. There are also some interesting ups and downs along the way, but essentially the data for this site does not support any warming.

  9. tckev says:

What ? Play the O’Donnell v Steig game again, reconstructing more mythical graphs about the Byrd station data again (again?).
Do these loons not know when the game is over?

People still care about Time Magazine?

  11. Justa Joe says:

It seems like every lib lay-expert on matters of the climate’s alarming observations of phenomena of impending doom seem to coincide with the first time that they’ve ever happened to look at the particular phenomenon. Of course, pa32r credulously believes everything printed and alarming about the climate. One would have to unless they’re a denier.

  12. Drewskilives says:

Steve, THE LEFT are the scumbags for lying?

By simply posting the 2nd paragraph of the article you are attempting a hatchet job on, everyone here would see that not only did TIME Magazine acknowledge that Antarctica is gaining ice but that their story was in reference to WEST Antarctica.

Why didn’t you post these two extra sentences?

“That day is still in the distant future—in fact, sea ice in Antarctica has actually increased in recent years, as more powerful northward winds refreeze ice on the continent. But as a new study published in Nature Geoscience shows, temperatures are on the increase in the massive West Antarctica Ice Sheet (WAIS)—and so is melting.

Only a person who knows they are losing the argument would continue to lie to make themselves appear relevant.

    • Only an idiot would believe that ice can be expanding at the warmer periphery and melting in the colder interior, which makes you an idiot – as you have demonstrated many times.

Why don’t you travel down to Antarctica and then report back to us about how hot it is.

Antarctica: It’s Getting Hot at the Bottom of the Planet

By Bryan Walsh Dec. 24, 2012

      • Drewskilives says:

Antartica is a very big place Steve, in fact, it is a whole continent and climate can be different in different parts of that continent. Perhaps that is why the article was focused on the climate of WEST Antarctica.

So why didn’t you post the follow on paragraph which clearly indicated that salient fact? Could it be that it would deflate your narrative?

      • Do you have reading comprehension problems?

Antarctica: It’s Getting Hot at the Bottom of the Planet

By Bryan Walsh Dec. 24, 2012

      • Drewskilives says:

Why can’t you ever just answer a straight forward question Steve?

The 2nd paragraph of the article you empune, clearly states West Antarctica – a part of Antarctica — is the area that is warming and that ice is growing elsewhere.

Any doubt about the meaning of the article was clarified in that paragraph.

So I ask again, why did you omit the 2 sentences that would have have cleared away all misconceptions? You must have had a reason.

      • No part of Antarctica is warming. I have no interest in repeating the Steig discussion for the fourteenth time. He keeps recycling the same crap over and over and over again.

  13. Justa Joe says:

    “more powerful northward winds”
It’s always something. Ever notice how the warmists always have a ready excuse for anything that mitigates their end times scenario(s)? Nothing even interrupts the absolute inevitability of CAGW, or rather the opportunity it presents to advance the agenda.

On that same note I heard that the that Mayans pushed out thier end of the world date to 12/21/2022.

    • Drewskilives says:

Well, if it wasn’t “more powerful northward winds”, then what was it?

      • A north wind blows out of the north, The author isn’t even educated enough to know the geography or basic terminology.

      • Justa Joe says:

You missed the point. I doubt that these sited “more powerful northward winds” if in fact that’s what is causing expansion of Antarctic ice is unprecedented during the millenia of Antarctica’s existence. I know that it’s almost impossible to even fathom, but have you ever considered that just maybe whatever is or more likely is not going on in Antarctica could be normal and not caused by man?

      • Drewskilives says:

Well, Steve as this is the most southern continent we are talking about, wouldn’t most winds come from the north? What direction do you think most winds come from in Antarctica? .

      • ROFLMAO. The story is supposed to be that cold winds come from the south pole and are expanding the ice towards the north. You really are making this stuff up as you go along.

      • Justa Joe says:

“more powerful northward winds” that reminds me when I heard Dessler claim that the 30’s were hot because it was dry (too funny) or when warmists said snowmaggedon was because of “warm” air from the Arctic.

There’s always an excuse in the game of Three-card Monte that we know as AGW.

      • Me says:

Well, you know they claim warm makes cold and Coolwhip is a defender of the faith! 😆

  14. Me says:

Merry Christmas to you too Coolwhip. 😆

  15. Time Magazine? They really still in business?
