  1. dfbaskwill says:

The amount of melting ice is almost unprecedented. See how I did that?

  2. More ice is melting this year at a faster rate than ever before in history. All due to global warming.

  3. Alan says:

Does all that melting Great Lakes ice mean that Chicago will be submerged under water this summer? If not, why not?

Love your sarcastic sense of humor! 😆

  5. Gail Combs says:

And the Daffys have FINALLY started blooming in NC… (About a month late.)

  6. Okie says:

Okay, help me out here. According to the http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/pr/ourlakes/lakes.html website, these are the water surface areas of the Great Lakes:
Lake Superior – 31,700 square miles
Lake Michigan – 22,300 square miles
Lake Huron – 23,000 square miles
Lake Erie – 9,910 square miles
Lake Ontario – 7,340 square miles
The total then equals 94,250 square miles
If only Lake Ontario is almost ice-free, isn’t the equation 94,250-7,340/94,250? That produces a percentage of 92.2%

I’m so confused; what am I missing to achieve the government’s 71.1%?

My Daffy’s about 100m north of the Gulf of Mexico were a month late as well. My Easter Lilies have just broken the surface in the past week. Last year they were a few weeks late. I have no idea how late they’ll be this year. We’re just now being inundated with tree pollen. Also about a month late.

  8. John F. Hultquist says:

    Okie,
You go wrong with “If only Lake Ontario is almost ice-free . . .
There is much surface area of the other lakes that have very little ice. Note the gray-scale with bands of 10-40% and 40-70%.
You need to look at raw pixel counts, not the map as shown here.
When it is daylight, you can look at the space just north of Cleveland, across 3.5 miles.
Two days ago there was no ice, today winds had changed and it was 99% covered.

Click on the lake outline (green) within the black box, then pick one of the 9 time and date stamped small images and click there.

I’m spending all my life savings buying carbon credits. I hope that will save the ice in the Great Lakes! The poor Great Lakes polar bears are dying and have no seals to eat!!!

    • Jason Calley says:

Give a polar bear a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a polar bear to fish and he eats …

Wait a minute. No, that can’t be right. I must be misremembering something here.

  10. Wow these quackitists are really clever. You mean ice melts into water during the heat of summer ? Holy cow, what a revelation ! Gee I need to get me one of those Pretty Happy Dude degrees with my chocolate bar purchase next time as well.

  11. According to Stroeve et al, since the Great Lakes have always had less than 1,000,000 km² of ice cover, they’ve always been ice-free. Since they’ve always been ice-free, any ice cover is unprecedented. Unprecedented ice-cover is obviously caused by runaway climate change (the New Null Hypothesis). We’re all doomed.

  12. Brian H says:

Great Lakes ice is dooo-oomed! Like every year.
