Arctic sea ice continues to expand rapidly, and is currently growing at a rate of one Manhattan every 20 seconds.

    Tony, the trajectory of ice-up in the Arctic should make for another interesting prediction as to when the planet will be completely covered in ice. Can you run an updated version using the latest linear trend?

      …and DMI volume gain is accelerating. From the lowstand on sep 10, sea ice volume took 17 days to gain 1,000 cu km. The next thousand took 16 days. Then, the rate of growth began to increase more rapidly: the 3rd thousand took 9 days, and the 4th thousand only 7, reached in the report for yesterday.

      Yes, that is right… since the lowstand DMI sea ice has increased by more than 4000 cu km, and is now at 10,271 cu km.

      I wonder if it will slow a bit as the mass of subzero air moves invades Siberia these next few days. We will see.

      • Crazy thing though… I took your information, calculated total joules to freeze that much ice, and divided by the seconds and area of the entire arctic ocean… It works out to 24,000 W/m^2, far more than could be taken away by radiation, so where, exactly, is this energy going? Some goes into the ocean, but I have to believe most is taken by air. I don’t think ice of any thickness can even transmit energy at this rate. You’re welcome to check the math (image attached)

    Would anyone be surprised if that once the red line becomes black it indicates a slower rate of growth?

  7. I like to use Lake Erie’s as volumes of water… The arctic is freezing at a rate that would freeze a Lake Erie solid every 3.3 days.
