The NYT claim they removed it as soon as it was pointed out to them.

However, I haven’t seen if the person(s) responsible have been named or fired.

That does not come under the heading of ‘innocent error.’
    That was intentional and malicious.

They only pulled it after they were called on it. The fact is that they cannot answer as to why it had to be “pointed out” to them. They can’t get away from the fact that nothing gets published in the NYT before reviewed by multiple editors and thus that cartoon is a reflection of the opinion of the editorial staff. They don’t get a benefit of the doubt because there is no doubt that every person that saw it and had input into the content, let it be published. There really is no excuse so any apology cannot be accepted as sincere.

I hope the same level of understanding and forgiveness will be extended to them as they would themselves provide to others if the tables were turned. None, in other words.

An honest mistake: they meant to put Putin’s face on the dog. Russophobia would have been completely ok.
