Arctic ice cap in ‘death spiral’

THE Arctic ice cap has melted so much that open water is now just 350 miles from the North Pole, the shortest distance recorded, scientists say.

What they are referring to is a small notch in the ice, shown below

Besides the fact that this is the mother of all cherry-picks,  that notch was due wind patterns, not melt – as shown below

The next image overlays 2007 ice in pink. It shows that the distance of the edge from the pole was almost identical to this year.

In 2008, Mark “Death Spiral” Serreze predicted that the pole itself would be ice-free

1) The north pole issue: Back in June, there was some coverage about the possibility of the North Pole being ice free by the end of this summer. This was based on recognition that the area around the north pole was covered by firstyear ice that tends to be rather thin. Thin ice is the most vulnerable to melting our in summer. I gave it a 50/50 chance. Looks like I’ll lose my own bet and Santa Claus will be safe for another year. There was indeed some coverage a some years back of an open north pole (and I was interviewed). This opening, however, was pretty clearly causes by unusual winds breaking up this ice, and not from melting out.

In 2000, the New York Times reported that the North Pole was ice-free.

Walt Meier says that the Arctic was ice-free sometime since the last ice age.

“Examination of several proxy records (e.g., sediment cores) of sea ice indicate ice-free or near ice-free summer conditions for at least some time during the period of 15,000 to 5,000 years ago”

It is mind-boggling how much fraud and deception these people can pack into one article. Almost every claim in that article was either incorrect or deliberately misleading.

Let’s look at the fraudulent science one piece at a time.

The amount of ice has increased by 60% since 2012, shown in green below. Scientists cherry picked one spot which lied along a boundary between high an low pressure system, where the winds blew persistently towards the pole all summer. Most of the Arctic saw a huge expansion in ice.

Next they quote Wadhams saying the Arctic will be ice free in 2015.

His credibility melted away quite suddenly in 2013.

Then they claim that the ice used to be five metres thick

Unfortunately for these crooks, we have actual records showing that the ice was only two metres thick in 1940 – the same as it is now according to numbers derived from PIOMAS and UIUC.

The whole Arctic scam is a complete fraud. There has been a massive increase in extent, area, thickness and age of the ice over the past three years. The loss of ice from 1988 was due to winter winds which pushed huge volumes of ice out in the North Atlantic, and have since reversed – and the ice is growing back. These scientists are either incompetent, dishonest or both.

Temperatures near the North Pole were below normal every single day of the melt season this year, and first or second coldest on record.

I attended NAU for a year and lived in Sedona for several years. In 1980 the ski area had twenty feet of snow on the ground. Other years they have almost none. The climate there changes every few weeks.

Climate March organizers made up some ridiculous numbers claiming that they had 400,000 people in New York. People on the ground estimated that the actual number was about one third of that.

By contrast, between Twitter and WordPress I had an actual 400,000 views last week, with a carbon footprint about one ten millionth of the climate marchers.

North American winter snow coverage is an excellent proxy for how far south Arctic air is penetrating into the United States. During years when the cold air pushes further south, the snow line pushes further south, causing a larger area of snow coverage. Winter snow cover has been increasing in a hockey stick since the very warm winter of 1995, and is now at record levels.

The animation below correlates North American winter snow cover vs. raw and adjusted US winter temperatures. As you can see, the correlation with raw temperatures is better than the correlation with adjusted temperatures, indicating that the adjustments degrade their accuracy. All that the adjustments do is add noise and diminish the correlation.

The raw temperatures show a net winter cooling since 1970 in the US, but the NCDC adjusted temperatures show a net warming.

Every test I have made on USHCN adjustments shows that they are complete crap. Their only purpose is to turn cooling into warming – for political purposes.

The EPA says that CO2 is toxic.

The rise in CO2 of 1:10,000 since the year 1900 is equivalent to packing an extra eleven people into Michigan Stadium. I added those extra eleven people in green below.

By contrast, human lungs generate 400 parts per 10,000 CO2, or an extra 4,400 people in the stadium. I added them in green below.

One could easily come to the conclusion that the EPA has no idea what they are talking about.

NASA says that the Arctic is melting down, but the ice says that NASA doesn’t know what they are talking about. There has been no trend in Arctic ice for eight years. I circled the only two days in the last 8 years which NASA is familiar with.

Tough to beat that combination

Through September 26, the percentage of 90 degree temperature readings in the US has been the fourth lowest on record. The frequency of 90 degree days has been plummeting since the 1930’s, and occurred only half as often this year as they did in 1936
