Vancouver Sun 1938 : Cowardice And Defeat Is Victory

Folks, that was a perfect example as to why compromise isn’t usually a good idea.
“Woodrow Wilson served two terms as a self-styled ‘progressive’, from 1913 to 1921. His quotes tell us all we need to know about him. His deeds proved his heart:
“Justly revered as our great Constitution is, it could be stripped off and thrown aside like a garment, and the nation would still stand forth in the living vestment of flesh and sinew, warm with the heart-blood of one people, ready to recreate constitutions and laws. …”
“No doubt a great deal of nonsense has been talked about the inalienable rights of the individual, and a great deal that was mere vague sentiment and pleasing speculation has been put forward as fundamental principle…”
“…Governments are living things and operate as organic wholes. Moreover, governments have their natural evolution and are one thing in one age, another in another. The makers of the Constitution constructed the federal government upon a theory of checks and balances which was meant to limit the operation of each part and allow to no single part or organ of it a dominating force; but no government can be successfully conducted upon so mechanical a theory. Leadership and control must be lodged somewhere… Governments are what politicians make them….”
Oh my, how times change – and remain the same. Dictators were very popular in the ‘teens, twenties, and thirties. Mussolini’s new fascism (an attempt to recreate ancient Roman glory) and Hitler’s rise were lauded. Franklin Roosevelt was seduced by Mussolini and Stalin. Cole Porter’s 1934 song Anything Goes had the lyric “you’re Mussolini” used as a compliment.”

What’s evil and old is new again.
That is part of the story!
Another great historical document.
I wonder if that headline writer years later wished he could go back and add a sarc tag.
11 months later on September 1, 1939 do you suppose he called in sick?
Maybe all these dummies resigned in disgrace and shame?
Nah, just kdding. They feel no shame.
