BBC Forecasts One Foot Of Sea Level Rise Per Year Until 2030

In the capital city, Jakarta, the main international Soekarno-Hatta Airport could be below sea level as soon as 2030, with outlying districts turned into lakes, says Singapore’s Straits Times, quoting a report from Maplecroft’s Climate Change Vulnerability Index.

BBC News – Indonesia: Rising sea ‘threatens 1,500 islands’

According to Google Earth, the airport is 20-30 feet above sea level. Wikipedia has it at 32 feet. The BBC claim would require 1-2 feet of sea level rise per year until 2030.

Even Jim Hansen’s exponential curve will not even come close to the BBC’s claim!

Perhaps the term “Public Disservice” needs to enter the lexicon of our times!

  2. CGB says:

The good thing is, if it came from BBC we know it wont happen

  3. Ken says:

You gotta admire their boldness, I guess. Nostradamus, at least, had the good sense to make predictions for things that would happen after he was sure to be dead.

  4. Ragtag Media says:

If you were planning a business or vacation trip to Japan, you better hurry. Most of thier airports are Off shore.

  5. J says:

You can’t make up comedy like this.

  6. Big M says:

Would that be the same BBC that announced that WTC 7 had collapsed, with the building standing right behind the reporter?

  7. D. Self says:

If you are going to lie might as well make it a big one because 47% will believe it without a second thought.

  8. geran says:

Years ago, I remember reading about sea shell fossils found in the Little Snowy mountains close to Lewistown, Montana. Seems like an elevation of 7000 feet, if I recall. The point is: What is the correct sea level SUPPOSED to be?

    • stewart pid says:

geran be careful with stuff like this. The sea level wasn’t at 7,000 feet but the rock now at 7,000 feet was at the bottom of the sea long ago. Big difference.

      • geran says:

Be careful with stuff like this. It is easy to miss the point if you get confused. What was the “sea level” when the rock at 7000 feet was below the sea?

        • Purakanui says:

The rock was below the sea – probably at similar levels to now. Many millions of years ago. It was lifted some 7000 feet because we live on an active earth. It’s called mountain building and it happens because the tectonic plates are moving into each other. Some parts are forced up; some down. Here in New Zealand we have limestone (sea bed) at high altitudes in the Southern Alps. It got there because it was shoved up, not because the sea was that high.

  9. Tel says:

If you trace back where it comes from, there’s a journalist called “ZUBAIDAH NAZEER” and he provides no actual reference for the claim that the airport will be under water by 2030.

Thee BBC of course, just copy without any fact checking.

Seems like she does about 50/50 political stuff and environmental stuff. Or that’s 100% political I guess.

    • Billy Liar says:

Isn’t that how the whole green business works? Some activist working for an NGO makes stuff up in a report. Brainless journo’s mindlessly repeat disinformation. Rinse, repeat.

  10. Bruce of Newcastle says:

Ironically the whole of Indonesia is being pushed up by the subducting Indo-Australia plate.

There’s more chance of sea level falling in Java than rising…except Jakata which is sinking into the mud its built on.

Someone might wish to explain to me how “pressure from high-rise buildings” is due to global warming.

  11. etudiant says:

Don’t blame the poor journalist, she carefully referenced her story.
The source of the claims is given; Mr Ancha Srinivasan, principal climate change specialist with the Asian Development Bank
Most likely the ADB is well in synch with the US Dept Of State and wanted to plant a helpful story for Sec Kerry’s big speech on the threat of CAGW

  12. Bone Idle says:

From the ‘Cant make this stuff up department.

    Don’t be worried.
The Indonesians invented a construction method for foundations known as the “Chicken feet Foundation.”

Some university academic noted how chickens can walk across muddy fields and not sink in.
He came up with a pipe construction scheme which “imitated the design of a chicken foot”.
instead of sinking deep slabs for road and runway construction the chicken foot design has been widely introduced throughout Indonesia – keeps the cost down.

The engineering brigade have many reservations about this construction principle however it saves money.

A few airlines have reverted to using the old Dutch built international airport in Jakarta because of problems at Soekarno-Hatta.

  13. Wily Wayne says:

By 2030, at the present rate of sea level rise, it will be 1.28 inches higher! As the Germans would say that “mach nichts”
