Jason belongs to the religious cult of “Manmade Climate Change”. Facts and reason are not going to shake his faith. If it gets warmer, his religion is responsible for it. If it gets colder, his religion is responsible for it. Ask him the percentage of the atmosphere that is made up of CO2…he doesn’t know nor does he want to. That would make him question his beliefs.
The amazing thing to me is how gullible we are to believe the government can do anything about it by passing a carbon tax. From what I’ve read, about 95% of CO2 is naturally produced and the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is less than 1/2 of 1% (385 ppm)! If these numbers are accurate, the most humans could control is 5% of the 385ppm or less than 20 ppm! It’s impossible, but if the governments of the world eliminated the human portion of CO2 by completely shutting down all bus, car, air travel along with all manufacturing, the best result would be a 365ppm atmospheric CO2 level.
It won’t stop the liberal push to impose a carbon tax even though America’s contribution is less than 20% of the anthropogenic CO2 or 4 ppm!
The climate will continue to change as it always has done. It’s a phony issue and all for the purpose of crating another income source for the government that will result in more control and another government bureaucracy. The deficit spending will continue!

But the premise is being disproved daily as predictions are contradicted by actual temperatures. It irks me when people conflate Anthropogenic Climate Change with Climate Change and Anthropogenic Global Warming with Global Warming. Climate Change is studied by Paleoclimatologists who work with ice and ocean sediment cores. They are interested in time frames of tens and hundreds of thousands of years and geological epochs. For instance, the climate record shows that there have been 5 interglacial (warm) and 4 glacial (cold) episodes during the current 400,000 record. We are obviously enjoying an interglacial event but 12,000 years from now all of Canada and 40% of the United States including Manhattan, thankfully, will be under 5,000 feet of ice. It is undoubtedly true that 99% of scientists believe in Climate Change however to state as fact that 97% believe in Anthropogenic Climate Change is both absurd and a statistical improbability. The climate record also shows that global temperature increases precede attending increases in atmospheric CO2 by periods ranging from 400 to 1400 years.
The fossil record and ocean sediment indicates that six thousand years ago Northern Africa rapidly devolved from a verdant South America Savannah into what is now the Sahara Desert. This event caused catastrophic upheavals to populations bordering the Mediterranean Sea. This begs the question, what anthropogenic vector caused this to happen? I’m quite sure that the heavy industry of the period didn’t play a role in this event. I’m with the Axial Precession hypothesis on this one. Anyone who believes that global climate supercomputer models are useful is, of course, living in a state of sin. The models did not indicate weather extremes, there is no scientific evidence backing this claim and the data seems to indicate the opposite. Flat drought and ‘extreme precipitation’ and cyclonic energy indexes and hurricanes, as well as tornado activity trending down for the last 50 to 70 years.

Scientists are measuring climate change over thousands of years to determine the world average temperature within tenths of a degree. So, today with our instruments we can do that but how do scientists measure the average temperature two thousnad years ago for comparison? And remember, that’s to within tenths of a degree? Tree rings or seeds? Not accurate enough. Carbon dating? Can’t get an world average.

Jason, starting in the 80’s, the whole argument was based on the claim that greenhouse gasses (especially man caused CO 2) caused the planet to heat up. Predictions claimed that Ice would disappear from the arctic, coastal U.S. would be flooded, our children and grand-children would never see snow. V.P. Al Gore told us the earth had a fever. If it was all caused by the greenhouse gas C0 2 as the left claims, why isn’t the heating of the earth continuing at an increased rate? Seems that if the heating has not increased in the past 10 or 15 years despite the fact we’re still driving SUV’s and producing carbon emissions, the CO2 / hot house relationship should be questioned. One thing is for sure…It’s not settled science. Anthropogenic global warming or man caused climate change, what ever the left want to call it, is not science, but an ideology.

There is zero danger from rising sea levels to Indonesia.
There is a risk of overdevelopment in Jakarta causing poor drainage to result in floods during the wet season, but that has nothing to do with CO2 or rising seas.

Man’s involvement is in focusing just on the eastern US as though that comprises the entirety of the world. So it’s colder than average in the eastern US. Why no mention of warmer than average in the western US, western Canada, Alaska, etc? If you are going to claim facts are on your side, use ALL the facts, not just the ones the appear to support your position. You’ll be more credible, then.
This graph is for the entire US. I live in Fort Collins, Colorado and it has been extremely cold this winter. Montana has been more than 20 degrees below normal this month. You have no clue what you are talking about.
But Lari that is how continental or global temperatures are measured. They take averages of large areas.

I do feel the need to add one note, and this is conjecture, since it is always risky to discuss other people’s motives. This scheming at APS HQ is so bizarre that there cannot be a simple explanation for it. Some have held that the physicists of today are not as smart as they used to be, but I don’t think that is an issue. I think it is the money, exactly what Eisenhower warned about a half-century ago. There are indeed trillions of dollars involved, to say nothing of the fame and glory (and frequent trips to exotic islands) that go with being a member of the club. Your own Physics Department (of which you are chairman) would lose millions a year if the global warming bubble burst. When Penn State absolved Mike Mann of wrongdoing, and the University of East Anglia did the same for Phil Jones, they cannot have been unaware of the financial penalty for doing otherwise. As the old saying goes, you don’t have to be a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing. Since I am no philosopher, I’m not going to explore at just which point enlightened self-interest crosses the line into corruption, but a careful reading of the ClimateGate releases makes it clear that this is not an academic question.
I want no part of it, so please accept my resignation. APS no longer represents me, but I hope we are still friends.

Regardless, it has been the 3rd coldest winter on record…As the only species that is capable of destroying or preserving the earth, we do need to respect it’s resources, not poach from it, or consume everything on it out of greed or convenience. The exact cause of the weakening of the earth’s magnetic field hasn’t been determined, but, carbon dioxide levels, ObamaCare and Israeli settlements have all been mentioned as possibilities. No one knows what the effects are, either, but generally, it is feared that they may be bad. There is concern that wealthy people will control an inordinate share of the weakened magnetic field, and therefore, a new government agency will undoubtedly be established to assure that everyone receives a fair share of magnetism. Since this may be a emergency, expedited action is called for. And so, a sole-source contract will be awarded to the same people who created the ObamaCare website. Of course, aberrations in the sun’s or the earth’s magnetic fields could disrupt electronic communications, and prevent the operation of a website. I don’t know why Obama or Sibelius didn’t think of that.

Looking at this graph of average winter temps over the past 120 years or so, and with my statistical understanding of linear regression, if I visually place a straight line fit to this data I see a slightly positive slope of maybe 1-2 degrees C. Doesn’t look like much in terms of global warming to me.
