There are two very important concepts here:

  1. Colder weather is more extreme
  2. The well documented US cooling trend from 1930 to the present, is not compatible with the hockey stick.

Hansen wrote this in 1999

Yet in the U.S. there has been little temperature change in the past 50 years, the time of rapidly increasing greenhouse gases — in fact, there was a slight cooling throughout much of the country (Figure 2). We caution that linear trends, as in Figure 2, can mask temporal detail. Indeed, Figure 1(b) indicates that the last 20 years have seen a slight warming in the U.S. Nevertheless, our analysis (Hansen et al., 1999a), summarized in Figures 1 and 2, makes clear that climate trends have been fundamentally different in the U.S. than in the world as a whole.

The mystery began with unreported events in late August 1945, when Stalin’s troops captured Japan’s atomic bomb plant at Konan, Korea.

Prior to WWII, conclusions from the cutting edge of science as advanced by Einstein, Planck, Curie, Aston et al. had started to merge with those from ancient religions and spirituality, like astrology and AA’s 12 Step Program.

This friendly merger ended abruptly and became antagonistic after:

a.) The FORCE released from cores of uranium and plutonium atoms destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945, and

    Was immediately followed by:

b.) Unreported CHAOS and FEAR amongst world leaders in late August 1945 after Stalin’s USSR forces captured Japan’s atomic bomb plant at Konan, Korea.

Post-normal science became more dogmatic and less rigorously honest than many programs of religions and spirituality after 1945, before finally surfacing as Climategate emails in late November 2009.

  2. SMS says:

Normal weather are the events created from the clash of cold air masses meetings warm air masses. The greater the delta T, the more intense the weather.

Under the AGW theory, the Arctic and Antarctic should warm precipitously faster than the rest of the world because CO2 would have a greater effect. This would create less extreme weather due to a lower delta T.

What we are seeing is “normal” weather. So far the Arctic and Antarctic are well within their range of typical temperatures and the weather we see is well within three sigmas.

….and Richard Keene as many will recall, has done some work on this. It wasn’t merely the USA which showed this pattern. Klimate Kooks want to pretend 2% of the earth was wildly different than the rest. Can’t find his charts now, but it showed the spike in the 30s covered all of north America. Scandinavia and Russia (moscow) also saw highs in the 30s. As well as the myriad of places Tony has shown here.

    Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

  5. tom0mason says:

On this day August 21, 1883, a large tornado struck Rochester, MN destroying most of the homes and commercial structures on the north side of town. A total of 24 people were killed in Rochester, but the tornado itself killed a total of 37 residents in southeast Minnesota. At least 200 people were injured.
