The US Midwest is having its coolest summer, after its second coldest winter on record. During the winter of 1932, the average temperature was above freezing.
Disrupting the Borg is expensive and time consuming!

In July 2012, my daughter and I drove through Chicago on our way to Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone, making it to Janesville, Wisconsin the first day. The temperatures were in the high 30Cs to low 40Cs. The next morning, the Madison newspaper noted that the city had broken the high temperature record that held since 1911. As we drove westward the temperature dropped till it was in the low 20Cs in South Dakota. Also evidence of more rain with crops looking greener as we made our way to Rapid City. So climate is like a yo yo and even varies across the continent.
That’s nothing. The border guards at Port Huron, Michigan stops us at the border, saying we set off their radiation detector. They ripped everything out of the car and questionsed us and run a geiger counter up and down us. Nothing! Sorry, it was an equipment failure.
They treated us very nicely, and it was amazing how they neatly put everything back in the car.
Yes the US border people at Sarnia- Port Huron can be pretty tough. I’ve crossed there 4 times and every time my rig was X-rayed.
Just a small point. I think that record was 1910. Whatever, plus or minus a bit. I always aim for accuracy.
Have to wonder just how much the Great Lakes warmed up this summer.
Anyone know where that data can be found?
http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/
And other than Erie, they all look pretty cold for this time of year…and even Erie isn’t as warm as it ‘should’ be.
Erie is so shallow it should always be warmer than the rest of course. But I’ll tell you that during my many trips along I-90 this last winter there was ice as far as one could see. And it all wasn’t crappy ice either since there were ice fishing huts out there.
Erie is cool. We’ve only had a single high above 90 to date in 2014 on the north coast.
2 years ago, it was 21 days with highs above 90.
No wonder the “guardians of the climate” “adjusted” the weather map color codes to make cooler temperatures look 8 deg warmer than in the past.
Amazing to look at Lake Erie Surface temperatures.
Bright boiled lobster red!!! For a surface temperature near 70 deg F……
You would think the lake was having it’s hottest year ever by that color code. It’s not even close to warm. Many years it crosses 80 deg F. Not happening this year.
Yeah, sometimes it gets to ‘bathtub’ temps…
Wonder if they will have to adjust those colors down again in the next couple years. Would make a great comparison when blood red indicates a temp of 50 deg. F.
Or they’ll just start giving the temps in some other scale…Kelvin looks very scary.
Color coding and scaling can change the perception of the real data and NOAA is a master at this.
Based on what big Joe Bistardi is saying about the coming winter I suspect that we may well see even more ice this year on the great lakes than last. The icebreakers are going to very busy.

That surprises me. I would have guessed mid to upper 40’s, tops
Unfortunately nothing NOAA publishes can be considered valid.
I just heard ABC news on talk radio tell me that this is the hottest summer on record with the most extreme weather.
Not here in Phoenix, America’s most unsustainable city. Had a Bar-B-Que this afternoon – high of 95 F. Unheard of cool weather. All summer has been mild.
re Global Warming debate:
“…it’s a very straightforward battle between, on the one hand a bunch of lying, greedy shysters, fanatical, misanthropic, anti-capitalist eco-loons, bent, grant-troughing scientists, grubby politicians and despicable rent-seeking millionaires and billionaires; and on the other a handful of brave, honest, rigorous, seekers-after-truth.”
from http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-London/2014/08/15/Mann-v-Steyn-if-this-trial-ever-goes-ahead-global-warming-is-toast
Thanks.
Though I think James pulled his punches on the adjectives a mite. I might not have been so kind.
I am looking forward to Tobacco-Team-Mikey-Mann’s testimony as Steyn seems determined to take it all the way through a trial now.
I do wonder if there is any way to discover who is bankrolling Mann’s Tobacco-team-lawyers? That would tell the world much.
Yesterday afternoon as I was driving around Yuma, the highest reading in my car was 101 degrees. In 20 minutes it dropped to 73 degrees and did not get back to 90 for the day because a cold, rainy, front came through. This morning when I got up at 6:30 it was 71. Today it may reach 95 degrees.
Meanwhile, the weather underground site said it reached 103 yesterday at the airport. In the record high section the site claims it was 104 degrees. I’m starting to distrust the weather record there, considering Masters’s background.

Looks like solar cycle 24 (now at the peak) is vastly weaker than 23 (peak 2002) or 22 (peak 1991).
It’s the cause of the pause. Get ready for a Big Chill.
It says this is the weakest solar cycle since cycle 14 in 1906. Get ready to walk to school through 2 feet of snow like grandpa did.
Uphill!!! Both ways!!!
