OT but related somehow: Looks like Lief has flip flopped on Solar climate relationship
http://hockeyschtick.blogspot.com/2014/08/its-sun_9.html
Great find! 🙂
Now I want to hear him say it explicitly, i.e., that the Sun is the main driver of climate, but I’m not holding my breath though.
As the hockeyschtick comment says, the Sun plus oceans give almost all of Earth’s temperatures, I’m absolutely convinced of that.
If he’s really changing his mind it’d be very important if he says it clearly, to open the door for others to follow.
OTOH, he’s clear about his belief that we could be entering a period like the Maunder minimum, in connection with the L&P effect- the Maunder period is the only one he calls grand minimum in recent centuries, while the Dalton period was just a “normal low” period.
IMO he’s correct in both counts, although the L&P effect is probably caused by some indirect magnetic effect, associated with the increased ratio of small-over-big spots noted recently, but probably not the original idea, which Livingston doesn’t support anymore although Penn still does,

The following graph is one of the most impressive I’ve seen regarding how different the present cycle is in comparison with previous ones,

We’re certainly *not* in normal cycle, and the aa-index just confirms it

If we are entering a new Maunder and if solar forcing is the main driver of Earth’s climate, it’s easy to conclude what’s coming in the remaining decades of this century. Abdusamatov and others have been talking about this possibility too,

You just got to love a “solar expert” that does not understand photon flux.
Only in “climate science”….
L. S. Had his rear end handed to him by the gang of engineers over at Jo Nova’s about a month ago. Maybe he has been ordered to eat crow so as not to lose to much ground with sceptics.

and again

These are towards the very end of the 800plus comments:
The discussion is why L. S. insist his flattened TSI reconstruction must be used in Dr. Evan’s model instead of the data that Dr. Evans used. Dr Evans does use L.S. reconstruction data and shows it in the top of the post yet L.S. continually bashes Dr. Evans for not doing so getting a bit nasty with thinly veiled accusisations…. weirder than snake shoes.
OUCH!
Oooops … They better delete or ‘adjust’ this file to show Warming!!
Steve, are you suggesting a correlation between warm temperatures and revolutions? 😉
The actual link is between cooling temperatures and revolutions. Famine has a nasty habit of doing that. Think French Revolution.
The CIA was getting a bit worried about it in 1974.
And the Donkey’s Rearends in our government DESPITE this history did away with the US strategic grain reserves in 1996. By 2008, the USDA announced “The Cupboard is bare” and there were food riots in 60 countries.

LIke JIhadis seeking to inflict ‘death to infidels’, our Rearends hold similar views. Did the Malthusians get inspiration from Islam? The world may never know :P.
