Dr Ruth – Blaming Nicole

My old friend Dr. Ruth at DMI (who gets confused by image processing) blamed Hurricane Nicole for the large increase in Greenland ice over the past year.

Guest post: How the Greenland ice sheet fared in 2017 | Carbon Brief

In a move sure to confuse and infuriate Dr. Ruth, I put her theory to the test by eliminating all of the excess ice gain which occurred before November 1, 2016 in the green line below. The green line is identical to the blue line, except that it is shifted down to match the gray 1981-2010 mean line on November 1, 2016.

What the green line shows is that Greenland gained another 75 billion tons of excess ice after November 1. So another big fail for Dr. Ruth. Blaming Nicole simply isn’t going to work. Greenland gained excess ice all through the year, summer ended early, and there was lots of excess ice gain during August, 2017.

Hej @TonyHeller – as an @dmidk scientist I’d like to know where you got that graphic – it’s a complete fake!

“What the green line shows is that Greenland gained another 75 billion tons of excess ice after November 1.”

Isn’t it more than that? I think, you with confidence kan write more than 100 billion tons. You might have measured from the 400 Gt mark, but the long time mean is lower at the end of the season.

    • John Niclasen says:

Now I see, the difference between the green and blue line is also close to 75 Gt. But the extra ice from the mean must be the value to use, rigth?

    • AndyG55 says:

“but the long time mean is lower at the end of the season.”

What do you call “long term” ?

Scientists have shown that current Greenland ice are is still pretty much at its peak in 8000 years. Much higher during the last major ice age , of course.

    • AndyG55 says:

And just to put things in their proper perspective.

Here is a graph of the Total Greenland Ice Mass since 1900, according to alarmist chicken-little bed-wetters.

If you think this graph is incorrect, create your own “Total Greenland Ice Mass graph since 1900” , and post it.

  3. Robert B says:

The centre of Hurricane Nicole passed just to the east of Bermuda but some of the eye did pass over the island so it did “strike the island” according to their citation. No mention of “landfall” so ” officially, it did not make landfall” is rubbish.
Makes you wonder about the rest.
Hurricane Harvey dropped about 50 Gt of water. So either Nicole was a missed opportunity for alarmologists or Harvey was only catastrophic because it didn’t move over a greater area.

  4. Rob says:

So if the cultists are basically saying every hurricane now is the result of climate change then wouldn’t by their ‘logic’ mean climate change is responsible for this increase in ice? Or is it a case for them where 2+2=4 only when they want it to be.

    • arn says:

I still wonder how hurricanes could exist before global warming:)

((but we need to be more tolerant to our friends from climate science.
They have been predicting super mega hurricanes for many many years,
and after many many years with 0% mega hurricanes and(the usual) 100% failed predictions they got angry and silent((hoping everyone forgets their fake predictions)).
Now finally some strong hurricanes appeared and they are so happy about this ((never waste a crisis to create fears and/or tyrannic/centralised laws)

      • Winnipegboy says:

        Two points:
During Glaciation, there probably were not many hurricanes. So big picture, before global warming there were likely less.

Global warmists have predicted 17 of the last 2 major hurricanes.

    • Griff says:

Scientists are saying that the hurricanes which do come along are more intense/stronger due to warming.

      • gator69 says:

No, that is what alarmists are saying.

Why do you hate poor brown people Ms Griff?

      • David A says:

They are not scientists. Zero global increase in hurricanes, cyclones, tornadoes.

      • AndyG55 says:

NO, real scientists are NOT saying anything like that.

The people saying that are NOT SCIENTISTS !!

      • sunsettommy says:

        Prove it Griff!

      • Gerald Machnee says:

        Griff “Scientists are saying”
But Scientists are not proving, so Griff & co just repeat rumours.

      • Robert B says:

30 peer-reviewed scientific papers reveal the lack of connection between hurricanes & ‘global warming’

      • McLovin' says:

Yes. They say that. Then fail to demonstrate how. Moreover, they also fail to demonstrate why the most powerful hurricane(s) were still many decades ago (such as the Labor Day one of 1935 and Galveston one of 1900). Watch the videos of the Weatherbell.com team. They forecasted this season as being active and with powerful storms back in MAY. And this did it be identifying patterns that had been seen BEFORE. There’s nothing new about any of this, other than people’s poor memories and perception of current happenings. That team also said days in advance that Harvey would stall and why it would stall and that it would inundate those areas with massive rain amounts. No magic. No CO2…just what they learned in Meteorology school applied well and demonstrated IN ADVANCE OF the actual event. Here: weatherbell.com

Griff, when nothing can disprove, or falsify a theory, it’s not a (scientific) theory, but rather, a dogma.

  5. Griff says:

“Overall, initial figures suggest that Greenland may have gained a small amount of ice over the 2016-17 year. If confirmed, this would mark a one-year blip in the long-term trend of year-on-year declines over recent decades.

The unusual year is mainly down to heavy snow and rain in winter and a relatively short and intermittent summer melt season. And the source of that bumper winter snowfall was the remnants of a hurricane that wreaked widespread damage 4,500km away in Bermuda.”

    • gator69 says:

Climate central is an alarmist echo chamber, they hate poor brown people too.

    • David A says:

Guess you failed to read the post.

      • AndyG55 says:

Seems griff learnt to type…… before he learnt to comprehend.

The proof of this is that he can type……

        …..but does not comprehend.

ADD medicines and recreational drug use can do that to you.

I’ve seen similar in low-IQ 14-15 year olds.

    • AndyG55 says:

Hey griff, did you know that Greenland ice area is only a tiny amount down from its peak during the LIA.. Highest its been in 8000 years?

You can stop wetting your bed about it, and get back mon your ADD meds again!!

Why do you continue to be a class-z CLIMATE CHANGE DENIER?

      • AndyG55 says:

Notice that it follows pretty much the same pattern as Arctic sea ice.

LOWER than current for most of the last 8000 or more years.

HIGHER than now ONLY during the last 3 or 4 hundred years.

        And guess why, griff.

The reason is because the last 3 or 4 hundred years has been the COLDEST PERIOD in the whole of the current interglacial !!

Will you continue to DENY this fact?

        Of course you will.

Will you keep your mindless ignorance as your only method of seeking attention?

        Of course you will.

    • sunsettommy says:

      Griff

You didn’t understand Tony’s post, which is easy to grasp.

The yearly melt rate of Greenland has been dropping the last few years, which alarmists loons like you try hard to ignore.

  6. Ron Hotchkiss says:

Greenland hasn’t had a net loss during the entire satellite record and likely none since the MWP. That would explain why the ice is nearly 2 miles thick and getting deeper every year, and why the scientist are continually digging themselves out at the summit station….even tin summer

  7. This religious faith business–even the godless altruist-collectivist varieties–is that they are refractory to measurement data. Just as the Ayatollah Climate Cassandra in the Vatican believes in walking cadavers and Al Gore the Prophet, so the rest decide to believe, then do it. If this runs counter to factual measurements, then facts be damned!
They’ve made up their memes and must now LIE in them or suffer the slings an arrows of outrageous physics. That’s the thing about altruism… it relies on self-deception.

  8. gator69 says:

This religious faith business… is that they are refractory to measurement data.

    Entirely false.
