    I’m always struck by how similar the coloration of your black-billed magpie is to my gravatar, which is of a friendly male pied butcherbird. He also often perches right at the very top of a nearby pine to watch over his territory, just like your magpie.

    Our pied butcherbirds are excellent singers with a wonderful flute-like song.

      Magpies here are not very social, at least with people. Several years ago their population declined due to some avian virus, but they have come back.
