Fifty Years Of Failed Apocalyptic Forecasts

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

– H. L. Mencken

Academics have been forecasting doom for my entire life.  Needless to say, it hasn’t happened, as we are still here.

A few days after we landed on the moon 50 years ago, Stanford professor Paul Ehrlich forecast that we would disappear in a cloud of blue steam within 20 years. Ehrich is John Holdren’s close associate, and Holdren was Obama’s science advisor.

A year later, he predicted that we would run out of food and water within a decade.

A few years later the “immensely likeable” Ehrlich jumped on the global cooling bandwagon.

Obama and Holdren were both pushing global cooling, before they started pushing global warming.

Their real agenda was to cut off the fossil fuel supply, which they were blaming for the global cooling.

And 50 years after his first failed predictions of doom, he is still at it.

The global cooling scare was ubiquitous for academics. The world’s leading climate experts wrote a letter to President Nixon in 1972 warming of a new ice age in about a century.

I have hundreds more of these predictions on file, but this is enough to get the point across.  Climate alarmists, and alarmists in general, are incompetent, dishonest hacks – who change their story every time the wind shifts.

  1. Psalmon says:

I think the Tom Steyer Climate Change debate should be like a reality TV show every week…One hour or even two is only enough to scratch the surface. It should be a live TV show where only one topic is discussed…temperature record…prediction accuracy…Arctic and Antarctic…Sea level rise…

You could come up with a better list, but it really should be a 10 episode screen share throwdown between teams of three that can change depending on the topic. No holds barred except the side not presenting is silenced during the other’s time.

Each side could ask itself and the other side a question round and round. The audience could throw questions online the each side picks for the other. No moderator. They’ll never go for it but it would be epic.

  2. Robertv says:

And you wonder why they don’t want to debate you.

  3. arn says:

Ehrlich science is dominating science and politics these days.
This happens when even the biggest bullshit remains unchallenged and no consequences or punishments happen.
Or as Burke/Aked used to say :”All that is necessary for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing”.
As result you get an increased negative selection of charackters the closer you get to the top.

But to be fair, this was long before the guy with the orwellian name Ehrlich(=hoenest) a thing and is about 250 years old going back to T.R.
Malthus and the Malthusian crisis that is supposed to happen any time soon since the day it was invented.

    • Johansen says:

      Two words: “Apocalypse Sells”

Ehrlich: not exactly the life of the cocktail party

      • arn says:

Well- you won’t get taxpayer money by saying:”Everything stays as it is”
You also won’t sell books or newspapers that way nor can you instwll a worldwide tax.

    • Margaret Smith says:

I haven’t got the links to hand but remember Ehrlich said in 1985 that in 10 years half the species on the planet will be extinct and in 20 years they’ll all be gone!

Clearly all that we think has been happening is but a dream so nothing to worry about.

  4. David Fowler says:

Good stuff here. I remember in the late 80’s I wanted to save the planet so I understand how young people are indoctrinated into believing the sky is falling.

    • Chris says:

Yes, me too. I remember coming home one day and telling my parents they were killing the earth with their cars and pickup truck. They shrugged me off. But I just learned this stuff in school!! Right? Little did I know I was not in school, I was in a government education center. But decades later I realized, none of the global warming stuff was coming true and the climate where I lived in Sacramento was the exact same as it had always been!

  5. Lance says:

    Great summary!
I love throwing this stuff in the face of alarmists….they quickly move the goal posts to some other topic….

    • McLovin' says:

Mostly, they just call you a name, take on a disgusted face like you said something genuinely crazy and stop talking, or even walk away. Attacking a person’s religion is a very serious thing and the amygdala is immediately activated for a fight or flight scenario response.

  6. Bob Hoye says:

Ice Cover on the Great Lakes, as of today, is at 66.1%.
This date in 2018 was at 42.2%.
    In 2017 it was 8.0%.
Snow cover for North America is at 15.5 X 10 to the 6th Km squared.
The normal high-side of the standard deviation band is at 14.
For the Northern Hemisphere it is at the high-side of the band.
Lot of ice and snow that can only be caused by cold and on the latter accompanied by increasing precipitation.
Diminishing solar activity, more cosmic rays, more clouds, more cooling.
    Makes sense.

    • AndyDC says:

Another major visit by the polar vortex in early March. It will be interesting to see where the Lakes stand after another bout of subzero weather.

  7. PhD Guy says:

Great synopsis Mr. Heller. Just opened Breitbart after reading your synopsis and this is the headline. I LMAO.

    • arn says:

That’s just pre consitioning/social engineering so that people don’t complain about the endless flood of invaders so that the destruction of nations can go on.

  8. GW Smith says:

Here’s the problem — Yesterday I talked to the 30-ish checker at the market and she said she had never heard of the book 1984…. It’s all about ignorance and youth. And the left knows it. Now California wants to lower their voting age to 17. Wonderful.
    Keep it up, Tony!

  9. Scarface says:

‘Obama and Holdren were both pushing global cooling’

    typo?

    Maybe Ehrlich and Holdren?
