There is also an element of “control” in all of this.

We have the policy in the United States, that bars the government from “acting in the name of God” or enacting policies for religious reasons (think sharia law, official persecutions, Henry VIII creating the Church of England for a divorce, etc…) called the Separation of Church and State.

Given the fact that the Government’s natural inclination is to do this (to gain more and more power) and the fact that few and fewer people are religious, and that science has become the “new religion”, it is only natural that the Government would try to subvert / corrupt or gain control over Science (as they have in the past with religion).

Lindzen has pointed this out many times, that government is corrupting scientific inquiry, so what we may need now are laws that guarantee the “Separation of Science and State”.

      President Eisenhower, 1961:

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers.

The prospect of domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present – and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.

And that’s exactly what happened. Thing is, the government scientists don’t invent all that much and the economy still depends on solitary tinkerers in their own time to come up with anything useful.

Wow, thanks for that! I have seen his warning about the Military Industrial Complex, but not this… incredible!

Throughout history human groups,no matter how isolated,
          have created religions
as spirituality is part of mankind.

          When you remove this spirituality
people will believe anything their new priests(celebrities, politicians, scientist) say
to fill the gap the absense of spirituality has left behind.
(and besides the absense of spirituality the destruction of the family unit takes its toll too)
Marx knew this very well with his materialism
when he created the opiate for the educated.

          • Robertv says:

And throughout history spirituality has been used against the people by those in power to gain more power.

      • Robertv says:

“and the power of money is ever present”

Without ‘money’ government would be powerless. So who is providing them with this corrupting drug? Who are the money changers behind the curtain? Who really is in power ? Not politicians or the press because they are just the puppets in this story. Follow the yellow brick road.

Having a cancer in control comes with an economical price. Since 1913 there has been no free market system to eliminate the to big to fail and like in a fire suppressed forest the US/Western economy is ready for the firestorm.

When that happens climate will be for most people their last worry. Let’s just hope that the light stays on.

        • Jason Calley says:

+10. The honesty and efficiency of the free market is the driving power of a free nation. Corrupt the functioning of the market by the introduction of unbacked fiat money and the market ceases to be either honest or efficient. Tyranny follows close behind.

    Read in American Thinker

So the Canadian court issued its final ruling dismissing the case that Mann had brought against Tim Ball.
Not only did the court grant Ball’s application for dismissal of the nine-year, multi-million dollar lawsuit, it also took the additional step of awarding full legal costs to Ball. A detailed public statement from the world-renowned skeptical climatologist is expected in due course.

This extraordinary outcome is expected to trigger severe legal repercussions for Dr Mann in the U.S. and may prove fatal to climate science claims that modern temperatures are “unprecedented.”

I hope this serves as a warning to other CAGW pushers.

    • Stewart Pid says:

I think it is actually “court costs” that were awarded. ie filing costs etc of a few hundred and not the lawyer / legal council costs of hundreds of thousands. I think Doc Ball will have to sue Mickey Mann to get his legal bill paid.

  3. Bob Hoye says:

The Danish Met Institute chart of the temp for North of 80 degrees has dropped:
    Half-a-degree Kelvin.

    • John Collis says:

Sorry to be pedantic but there’s no such thing as a half-a-degree Kelvin, it should be half a kelvin or half a degree Celsius.
The unit is kelvin, lower case k, no degrees, 1 kelvin is equivalent to 1 degree on the Celsius scale or 1.8 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale.
The Kelvin, upper case K, scale of temperature has 0 set to -273.15 degrees Celsius, “absolute zero”.

    Hi Tony

There is a guy on Youtube who sounds so rational(!), and he recently posted a video purporting to disprove that the sun has a strong influence on our temperatures. Perhaps you could view the video and critique it or perhaps suggest someone else who may be qualified to do the critique. This is the video:

    • Anon says:

      Hi Fhb5,

You might want to check out these two videos from Willie Soon, who is actually doing the solar research:

The Sun Also Warms: Dr. Willie Soon Shows the Sun-Climate Connection

The “Global Blue Sun”: Solar Anomaly during 1450s-1460s?

“Just have a think”, patches together a lot of assumptions that Soon feels are invalid, and does not go into the details regarding the acceptance of those assumptions. Hence the reason for sounding so rational.

The sad part is that he is arguing with a pre-determined conclusion in mind. There is no way that another competing temperature mechanism can exist for him, other than CO2.

Likewise, I could do a very convincing 30 minute lecture “proving” that the Earth is flat, by avoiding any topic or piece of data that might conflict with my hypothesis and then do some hand-waving to minimize the other objections.

      I hope that helps…

    • Anon says:

Sadly, he does sound so rational, but a lot of what he presents is dubious or downright incorrect. For example:

He claims that the variance in solar irradiance is insignificant and that there is no way that it could change temperatures on Earth. (Okay, we might accept that.) But if you are going to bring up “insignificance”, a 50 ppm increase in Carbon Dioxide concentration is .005% of the atmosphere. (Think about adding 5 more people to a stadium of 100,000 persons) which is just as or even more insignificant.

What they claim causes the Green House effect involves a feedback mechanism where extra Carbon Dioxide kicks more water vapor into the atmosphere. So when he talks about the RF of CO2 it includes the water vapor feedback mechanism (not just the CO2 alone). Likewise, an increases in solar irradiance will also add more water vapor to the atmosphere, but this is not calculated / given – he just disingenuously leaves you with the W/m2 figure. (using this device I could dismiss the CO2 hypothesis by just claiming 50ppm CO2 is insignificant).

  5. Scissor says:

He readily admits that no one knows what caused the Little Ice Age and he uses corrupted data in his arguments but blames volcanic activity. He ignores the occurrence of effects, such as the year without a summer and completely ignores clouds, which are not well understood.

He repeats alarmist lies about all kinds of weather events. He is either ignorant or deliberate in this regard.

  6. Andy says:

Quite hard to judge at the moment how bad it is from differing sources. However now the military is involved ( not the fire brigade)

“The states of Para, Rondonia, Roraima, Tocantins, Acre and Mato Grosso requested the army’s help, Environment Minister Ricardo Salles announced on Saturday, one day after President Jair Bolsonaro authorised the military to step in.”

Now the army is stepping fighting the fires, or not fighting the fires. depending on what news source, including this one, you believe in.

Here’s a rare critical examination of climate models in a main stream publication, the Washington Examiner:

The great failure of the climate models

  8. Karl-Erik Tallmo says:

Thanks for the video, with many interesting old newspaper clippings. When it comes to climate prophets, I guess David Attenborough is one of them.

I wrote a pretty extensive article about Attenborough’s film “Climate change – the facts”, where I address a great deal of the erroneous statements and half-truths that are expressed in the film. See:

It is a remarkable film, with an imagery and a rhetoric that makes one associate to such unpleasant propaganda films that one believed we were spared in our present-day knowledge society.

(If you haven’t seen Attenborough’s film, it is still available here: )
